Rustic and nestled atop a 2200 ft.elevation mountain in Walden, Vt., this lakefront summer cabin has all the back-to-nature elements: quiet, clean air & water, cool breezes whistling in the spruces; loons, ducks, birds all swimming or flying by. You might even spot a moose across the lake, while you are out boating or fishing. The perch is plentiful. But the best part is watching the sun set every night from the full porch--absolutely gorgeous. And you can see the stars on a clear night without a telescope, but bring your own if you are a star watcher. Gas heater warms you up on chilly nights. Sleeper sofa (double) in the living area provides extra sleeping space for company. Everything is provided, except the linens, and there are plenty of extra blankets & pillows on hand. New refrigerator and microwave. Landline cordless phone, free in-state calling is available, and possibly cell phones may work if outside on the road, but few cell towers up in almost untouched landscapes of Vermont. Internet service is provided, there's wi-fi and a printer is available also, if you must touch base with the world. Bring your own laptop with DVD player if you are a movie fanatic. There is also a small, propane hibachi table-top grill for your use, and a new Cuisinart electric stand-up grill. There's so much to do outside: a canoe, paddles & life vests are available, along with a little inflatable dingy, for an older child, up to 100 lbs. A local hike in the Steam Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, on the other side of the mountain, up about 1.2 miles into the woods leads to an old hidden-away mill foundation and a spectacular waterfall called Cheever Falls. On a warm day, wear a bathing suit under your clothes, and you are all set to jump into the pool at the bottom of the falls. It's a very magical place. Other hikes, attractions and places to explore are provided in a Notebook at the cabin. A public beach and larger boat or sailboard launch is about 8 miles away, at Caspian Lake in Greensboro. Particulars: We ask that you sweep-clean the place upon leaving, (e.g., leave it as you found it), take all trash and recycling with you, or take it to the nearby Hardwick Convenience Center, Sat. morns. on Rte. 14 South, about 1.5 mi. from the center of Hardwick. There is a small fee to use it. A bit closer there is a truck parked outside the Tops supermarket on Sat. morns., just outside Hardwick, on Rte. 15 West, Wolcott St., and they also charge a small fee. The number to call the Center should be either on the fridge, the little message roll on the doorway to pantry, or in the Notebook, or in the local phone book. Please return the key to where you found it. Instructions on access, directions, etc. will be provided once payment is made and you are booked. We know, once you are there, you'll relax, thoroughly enjoy the peace and quiet, except for the occasional loon calls, a heron or two, or ducks quacking as they swim by the shore :) More

About the neighbourhood
Coles Pond, actually more of a small lake, is atop Walden mountain, in the town of Walden, about 27 miles west of St. Johnsbury, 28 miles northeast of the Barre-Montpelier-Stowe area, nestled in whats known as the Northeast Kingdom -- beautiful, pristine, spring-fed waters, spruce, cedar & fir trees all around, and miles and miles to walk or hike. Of course, the biggest hike, up Mt. Mansfield and the Spruce Peak is in the Green Mountains, and part of the Appalachian Trail, about 30 miles away. Lots of small towns have unique country stores, lots of farmers markets, arts and crafts and artisans dot the countryside roads. You won't see any billboards or much pollution in the clean state of Vermont, just clean air and cool lakes and rivers. Stop and ask any Vermonter directions and they w...
Getting around
You'll enjoy exploring all the small towns and villages around Walden, like Greensboro, where Caspian Lake and The Willey's Store is. Hardwick has a Farmer's Market on Fridays, and Danville has one on Wednesdays. Closest movie theatres are in Morrisville, VT, and in St. Johnsbury. In Hardwick, there's a fabulous restaurant called Positive Pie on Main St., across the street is the Village Restaurant, great home-cooked meals & the best sweet-potato fries around. For pizza, it's the House of Pizza, down on Wolcott St. (Rte. 15 West). There's a putt-putt golf place behind an ice cream shop on the outskirts of Hardwick.
