Like the previous reviewer, we have stayed in many cottages in various parts of the UK and Sherwood Cottage is probably the best we have experienced. The house itself is spacious, spotlessly clean, and everything a guest could possibly want is provided. There are so...More

Beautifully renovated, spotlessly clean and stylishly furnished, Sherwood Cottage is comfortable and nicely located. There's a useful shop in Burray Village, and the big Tesco in Kirkwall is about 20 mins away. Plenty to see (especially if you're interested in prehistory or WW2) and the...More

Very comfortable accommodation, home from home. Clean, well equipped, all you could ask for in a holiday let. Welcome pack on arrival. Be advised that the family bathroom is downstairs but no problem , main bedroom has an en suite so ok. Would recommend.

About the neighbourhood
Burray island is linked to the south Mainland via the Churchill Barriers which were built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War. In Burray village, the Sands hotel with restaurant and bar offers lunch and evening meals. The local shop sells essential items and there are a couple of other small shops in St Margaret's Hope. There is a tea room at the Fossil Heritage Centre in Burray. Panoramic views can be seen by taking a short walk of around a mile to the top of a viewpoint starting near the local school. The nearest beaches are the local beach, beaches at Churchill Barriers 3 and 4 and the natural barrier between those, and the Sands of Wright again on the way to the gun battery at Hoxa.
Getting around
Car is the easiest way to get around Orkney to see major sites. However, the main bus route from St Margaret's Hope to Stromness via Kirkwall, has a stop a couple of minutes walk from the cottage. Buses go approximately once an hour and further details can be found on the Orkney Islands Council website.
