About the neighbourhood
'Avoca' was one of the original stations and covered 1,100 square miles. The homestead is situated on the banks of the Darling River 50 kilometres upstream from the confluence of the Darling and Murray rivers and the historic township of Wentworth. The region receives a lot of sunshine but little rain (av 275 mm p.a.) but Australia's two longest rivers provided essential water for livestock, enabled the pioneering explorers, drovers and pastoralists to produce beef cattle, sheep and wool for local markets and shipment to England.
