Holiday Rental House
'The Cowshed' was indeed historically a cowshed on what used to be a farm. In 2011, this Grade II listed building was fully renovated to be holiday-let accommodation. The cottage is ideal for guests wishing to be in close proximity to open countryside (1km by car, or 300m via public footpath), and for easy access to Manchester via rail link (half hour journey, every half hour). Please note: although still on the same site as the old farmhouse, the farm is no more, and the land has become urban development over the centuries; the property itself is not now in open countryside (see map/satellite view). Most visitors prefer to visit by car, and there is ample parking space both right in front of, or to the side of the property. The Cowshed has three rooms: bathroom, bedroom and lounge/diner/kitchen. The Cowshed is accessed via a barn door-type entrance, into the lounge/diner/kitchenette. The front of the cottage faces south - very pleasant on sunny days! The lounge area has a leather settee, a small TV/DVD, and a log burning stove/fire. A 'starter pack' of logs, lighter, and kindling is provided. A range of traditional table games are available. The kitchen area has a dining table with two chairs, and a range of cooking facilities. The bedroom is accessed via the lounge area, where there is a double bed.The bathroom is accessed via the bedroom; There is a sink, toilet, and a bath with an electric shower. Water is heated by an internal immersion heater. This is a well-insulated cottage, and it can be heated by the wood burner. There is also radiator central heating in winter, or on request at other times of the year.Guests have access to a small outside seating area within the turning circle. The owners provide fresh flowers, cakes, tea, coffee, milk and sugar to welcome visitors to the property.Guests can access the property from 3pm on day of arrival, sometimes earlier but only by prior arrangement with the owners. About the neighbourhood
The Cowshed is situated on a hill high above Glossop town centre. The cottage is an ideal centre for a range of holiday experiences: touring by car, walking - short walks or major challenges such as the Pennine Way, climbing - i.e. at Stanage Edge, near Hathersage, or lounging around on site, perhaps venturing to the local Beehive pub 400 yds along the road. The Beehive serves a range of English and Thai dishes. The pub offers free WiFi access, a cash-back facility, and a choice of 150 whiskies. The hilly area is popular with cyclists, and there is a lock-up facility for Cowshed guests' bikes - i.e. the owners' garage!
How to get there
Avoid Satnav when you get to Cliffe Road - this has caused problems before, and also avoid coming via Milltown/Cross Cliffe. The easiest route is via Whitfield Avenue, left at the top, and drive 500m. The property is opposite house number 37 Cliffe Road, 20m down a driveway; the entrance gate is on the right. Park outside the Cowshed in the turning circle, or round the side of the cottage if you prefer. The owners live on the same site, next door at Flatt Farm, the old house set sideways on Cliffe Road.
