A pretty, cosy cottage located in one of the most beautiful places in Nova Scotia. Loon Lodge is a comfortable 3 bedroom house with a postcard view of the town of Mahone Bay and it's three churches. Cars literally stop to take photos in front of the cottage - the view is that nice! The owners have taken great care to decorate & provision the house - right down to the choice of reading material in the rooms - lots of Maritime yarns and classics - this would be a great place to spend a quiet rainy day reading! We had good weather and there is much to do in the area - which is all detailed in the "Renter's Manual" and the numerous tourist guides/brochures in the house. The cottage also has several boats - two small kayaks, an inflatable rowboat and a 16' ABS canoe, along with paddles, life jackets, pumps and such. There is a small fleet of bikes - of surprising good quality - and helmets - and there are many places to ride them - just read the "Renter's...

The hosts tried in every way to anticipate the needs of guests. I would have given 5 stars but we, unfortunately, chose a week during an extended drought and the water comes from a dug well that is based on the water table. This meant that we really had to conserve water which limited the use of the new washing machines. I loved the house. I loved the porch and I loved the private pier. We sat outside in the mornings and listened to the loons and read books. In the evening we sat on the pier and enjoyed family. There was a canoe, kayaks, and 2 dinghies as well as bikes and all the gear that was necessary to use the items safely. The hosts provided lots of pamphlets and information about places to see and things to do. As this was our first time, they sent us various e-mails about what to expect when we arrived at the area. What could they have done to make our stay better? Absolutely nothing. No one can prepare for a drought but they had a wonderful team to help us navigate...

About the neighbourhood
The historic town of Mahone Bay is one of the prettiest harbors on the east coast of North America. The colorful homes and galleries, cozy harbor and hills above the water make this special harbor one of the finest in Nova Scotia. Our favorite activity is sitting on the Lodge Porch or pier and just enjoying the harbor sights and visiting yachtadded bonus is the relative absence of fogs in Mahone Bay, probably due to the relatively warmer, shallower waters. We get fog a few mornings a week and they are generally gone by 10 AM.Walking, bike riding and boating are the favorite ways to see the local sites. The many miles of gorgeous local waterside roads are some of the for scenery.<Nearby Lunenburg and Chester - both 15 minutes away - also historic towns, provide even more variety with a... more

Most folks drive over from the States and Ontario. Some fly and rent at car at the Halifax airport, about 70 minutes away on good high speed roads. A few take the new car ferry from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, then drive the 2.5 hours north to Mahone Bay. In the 11 years we’ve been renting Loon Lodge to summer guests, we’ve had families from as far as Germany, Britian and Australia. Any way you get there, it’s worth the trip.
