Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women, teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. This developed into a cottage industry that helped to improve the circumstances of these women and also gave birth to Penland. The school now provides instruction in all areas of craft from weaving, pottery, glass and ceramics to metalwork, printmaking, letterpress, photography and much more. The campus occupies 420 acres on the mountain near Conley House. Visually inspiring all by itself, the campus is open for tours by appointment and has a catalog of courses that are great for a range of skill levels. Also, open to the public is Penland Gallery, which offers fine craft in all media made by skilled craftspeople from all over the world. They also have a coffee shop and gift shop and they love to have visitors, so stop on by! Because of the school and the natural beauty of the mountains, the area is filled with artists and crafts people making it a truly unique area of the country that you'll want to explore. DETAILED AMENITIES Conley House is made for entertaining! Natural light streams into the house. Just outside the living area is a large hand-laid stone terrace with seating and a teak dining table with room for 6. The kitchen, living and dining area is open, making it great for entertaining and being a part of your own party. The living room has a large 4K HDTV with streaming using a Roku 4 device, DVD player, and sound bar. The dining area can seat up to eight and the bar can accommodate an additional eight. A half bath is available for guest's convenience. (See image of layout.) KITCHEN: It seems everyone plans to make biscuits or pancakes when on vacation, so we try to make that easy by keeping pantry staples like baking soda and flour on hand. Our kitchen has just about anything a cook might need from high-end appliances, cookware, carbon steel knives, and cutlery to handmade dishes, a salad spinner and a Kitchen Aid stand-mixer. We also try to keep organic herbs & spices and good extra virgin olive oil around, so guests don't have to buy large quantities of things they only need a little of. Kitchen includes: gas range, electric convection oven, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator, garbage disposal, microwave, drip-style coffee maker, French coffee press, pour over coffee maker, tea kettle and a full complement of cookware, serving dishes, kitchen tools and dinnerware, as well as dish soap and dish towels.
