Villa della Gioia offers the most romantic holiday in a secret corner of Italy where every stone whispers romance and every corner reveals history. The romance includes internet, all mod cons, TV, video, linen, books and a welcoming bottle of vino. Courtyard leads into large bright fully fitted kitchen with cathedral ceiling and dining table under crystal chandelier. Living room with cathedral ceiling, marble fireplace, comfortable seating and private balcony overlooking amazing views. Bedroom with large double bed, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, balcony to rear with ensuite. Everyone was here some time – the clues wait your discovery in farm masserai, Greek temples, Norman castles, sassi, baroque cathedrals, Byzantine painted cave chapels, trulli & fortified hilltop towns like Irsina. Italy's biggest national park Monte Pollino (60 mins) has Apennine wolves, black woodpeckers & in winter, skiing. Metaponto (40 mins) with fine sandy beaches, children's activities, golf & the most complete Greek urban remains. Matera (30 mins), a Unesco World Heritage Site, its ancient cave dwellings used in films of Christ's time. The first Crusade planned in Melfi, owned by Frederick II whose Irsina castle is now restored. Enjoy medieval splendour of Saints' day festivals. Freshest food, finest dolce, choice wines from hospitable people in local farms, shops & street markets. Public swimming pools, karting, tennis, rock climbing, flying nearby. More

About the neighbourhood
Irsina, a little known town in a little known region. A remnant of the time when Basilicata was the centre of the world, when Frederico II, stupor mundi, wonder of the world, Holy Roman Emperor made the region his capital. Site of famous battles when one world, one power saw off another. The old Palazzo, the Cathedral, a myriad of little churches, the metres thick town walls all tell of the town's once illustrious past. Now its myriad of tiny streets that wind through its quarters and squares tell of an era when every room housed a family and filled the air with the din of everyday life. Now they are slowly coming back to life as people rediscover the old town, where old traditions continue at least for another generation - making tomato sauce in August, pressing grapes in October and the ...
Getting around
There is public transport - a train and busses - to Irsina but they are limited and some are dependent on connections. There is a regular bus service to Matera, Altamura and Gravina and connections to Bari. Most guests hire a car however to have maximum freedom to visit other parts of the area at their convenience. Irsina is ideally placed to visit Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019.
