We therefore provide neither food of any kind, nor any toiletries other than inital supplies in relation to hand hygiene. An inventory, including details of what initial supplies of consumables are provided, is provided on request and, in any event, after booking confirmation.) What you've not brought with you can easily be bought at shops nearby - most of which are open until late. (Again, we provide details after booking confirmation). If you need assistance, contact us the day before your arrival (two days if a Monday), or sooner, and we'll do our best to help. Fuel for the eco-stove is not included in the rental. Coal and natural wood are unsuitable and must not be used. Details of suitable eco-fuels, and where to obtain them (including from us), are provided after booking confirmation. Eight Askernish was completely rebuilt in 2006 to then-current building standards, but cannot claim an especially sustainable design and or a noteworthy means of construction. That means the eco-credentials of the house will depend all the more on the the way the cottage is managed, and how it is lived in from day-to-day. We continue to invest in improvements to building infrastructure - responding to advances in building technology and building standards. We maintain the highest standards for sustainable (and affordable!) household management - heating, cleaning, laundry, waste-avoidance, recycling ... And our guests, too, make their own contribution - perhaps the most vital contribution of all, in their day-to-day living at Eight Askernish Without the goodwill and best efforts of our guests, our endeavours would be reduced to nought - as if they had never been. All of us - our own generation, our elders, our children and those generations to come, all have to question their own expectations - on holiday, too. The majority of our guests have shown themselves to be ready to do just that, many of them returning to Eight Askernish time after time. So what does this mean for you, as a guest? It means : Take good care of the building, its fixture, furniture and furnishings ; Avoid unnecessary consumption - especially of energy ; Minimize the waste you produce and and help ensure that what can be recycled is recycled. These things are rapidly becoming the 'new normal' - whenever, wherever - including on holiday.More

Interaction with guests
On arrival you'll let yourselves in: the door will be unlocked and the key on the kitchen worktop. We live about eight miles away, but as we work from home are available if needed to attend to any problem. If you wish to, you can call in at our home, the historic walled kitchen garden at Cille Bhrighde, home to The Hebridean Woolshed (and next door to Kilbride Cafe and the lovely sand beach just across the road from us). But otherwise you've the luxury of solitude to enjoy, with only the wildlife and the sheep of the adjacent croft land to keep you company!

Two nights wasn't long enough on this idyllic island. A family wedding was the highlight so sadly not enough time to explore. Very pretty cottage with all amenities.

Thank you for your review, Margaret. Perhaps your family will allow you to come back to Uist without compelling you to attend a wedding - and you can please yourself!

This is a very comfortable cottage, freshly decorated with a full range of modern equipment, good beds and bath, matching crockery etc. The constraints of size and layout mean that the only place to eat is the small breakfast bar in the kitchen - but...More

We have been so surprised that very few guests have an issue with the fact that there is no dining table and chairs : we suspect the majority eat in the sitting room, perhaps watching TV! In general, midges are not so much a problem...More

Guests are welcome to bring firewood with them, but if that is not practicable we can supply at cost rate (though as our guest Ecoblogger says, that's relatively dear due to all firewood being imported by ferry). Ecoblogger lived up to her name, because she...More

About the neighbourhood
Eight Askernish is one of fifteen or so crofts and houses that make up Askernish township scattered along a quiet lane, about a mile long, leading from South Uist's main north-south road to the island's Atlantic coast. There, amongst the dunes, is the world-famous Askernish golf course. 8 Askernish is provides a perfect base for wildlife-watching, walking, cycling, whether along the quiet roads, or the sandy lanes and beaches. However you get about you surely can't miss the abundant wildlfe. golden eagles, sea eagles, basking sharks and whales, otters, corncrakes, yellow-backed bumblebees, orchids in their thousands, - and many other species that elsewhere are rare and endangered.
Getting around
A car is highly recommended. A bicycle is also recommended for exploring locally - especially the quiet lanes and tracks along the western shoreline. (Both cars and bikes are available in Uist for hire.) Eight Askernish is about 5-10 mins walk from a main bus route, with services suitable for arriving and leaving - but not for seeing the sights. We recommend walking gear to get the most out of your holiday, especially for exploring the hills and shores and discovering the amazing wildlife.
