Cottage
Furzeland Down Cottage is set within a 20-acre private estate, made up of ancient bluebell woodland and meadows. Pathways crisscross the grounds, making it a wonderfully tranquil idyll. Furzeland Down sits on the edge of the Walkham valley, within Dartmoor National Park. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cottage is well insulated, cool in summer and warm in winter. A lot of thought has gone into its layout and decor, creating an uncluttered, open plan, bright yet warm, family-friendly space. Guests have described it as giving you a hug. The kitchen is aimed to please those who enjoy cooking. You will find everything from an electric whisk to a wok, with a good selection of sharp preparation knives, bottle openers and vegetable peeler...Furzeland Down Cottage is set within a 20-acre private estate, made up of ancient bluebell woodland and meadows. The kitchen is aimed to please those who enjoy cooking. You will find everything from an electric whisk to a wok, with a good selection of sharp preparation knives, bottle openers and vegetable peelers. There's plenty of glassware, from champagne flutes to tumblers, smart matching cutlery and a quality Denby dinner service, so no compromising when catering for family and friends. In the living room, there is a comfortable six seater L shaped sofa, an antique 2 person seat and an old rocking chair. The large old farmhouse pine table comfortably accommodates 8/10. There is an under-stair laundry area, which houses a 7kg washing machine and a 7kg tumble dryer, there is also a washing line in the garden. There are five comfortable beds in four rooms - 1 x 4' 6', 1 x 5', 2 x 3' twins and 1 x 3' on the mezzanine, also a comfortable folding bed and a travel cot. There is a good selection of DVDs, books and family friendly games. For your safety, there is a heat alarm, two smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide gas detector and in the kitchen a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher. At the top of the stairs, there's a baby gate for those travelling with little ones. Outside there are 20 acres of ancient bluebell woodland and meadows for you to explore, listen to the birdsong and take in the fresh country air (there is a map of the grounds in the info folder). You may well see the family of fallow deer during the day and the badgers that live here at night. Enjoy a complimentary cream tea or a homemade cake on arrival, so you can relax into your stay as soon as you arrive. Next to the cottage is your own private enclosed garden with a picnic bench, outdoor table tennis table, football goal, netball hoop and BBQ. On a warm day take a plunge in the pool before setting off to explore the area, there is so much to see and do, whether it's sightseeing on Dartmoor, a trip to the coast or a visit to a National Trust property, everything is near at hand. We can help you with an itinerary if you wish, as throughout the summer months there are various agricultural shows, village shows, food festivals, outdoor music and theatre experiences to enjoy. In August Plymouth hosts the Firework World championships - well worth seeing! If you like bluebells the woodland and meadow at Furzeland Down looks simply stunning, with acres of bluebells from mid April to early June. We look forward to meeting you. RosemaryMore

The owners are incredibly helpful and had decorated the cottage for Christmas. The real downside is the one (downstairs) slightly cramped bathroom which smells slightly of damp and has only a dated electric shower emitting a trickle of hot water. There is also no storage...More

About the neighbourhood
The ancient Stannary town of Tavistock was recently voted best market town in England and is a few minutes away by car. It has a very interesting indoor pannier market, restaurants, bistros, cafes and pubs, a lovely river walk, eclectic shops, new indoor pool and gym and an arts centre It is the largest town in West Devon, with fine architectural buildings built by the the 7th Duke of Bedford We are 25 minutes from Plymouth with spectacular views across the Sound and the Barbican being a particular draw. Just across the road from the property is the national cycle route 27, where you can cycle or walk to North Devon in one direction and Plymouth in the other. There's also 368 square beautiful miles of Dartmoor National Park to discover.
Getting around
Ideally by car to see what this beautiful area has to offer but bike and walking boots work well too.
