He was the Lord High Treasurer of England during the reign of Elizabeth I and responsible for building Burghley House. Stamford is a thriving place, with numerous independent and high quality restaurants and shops and a bustling market on Fridays. Plenty of entertainment is available at the Arts Centre. Built in 1768, it is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England and hosts many events throughout the year, from films and stand-up comedy, to willow weaving workshops. Slightly further afield, Rutland Water, 10 miles to the west, is one of Europe's largest reservoirs and is now a haven for fishing, cycling, sailing and wildlife, and rolling countryside with picturesque villages all round. Burghley is within Hidden England, a treasure trove of great family days out and activities, combined with some of England's most stunning heritage sites, including Belvoir Castle, Peterborough Cathedral, Grimsthorpe Castle, Rockingham Castle and Easton Walled Gardens.
