About the neighbourhood
Historic Civray is the sweetest of French towns with a twice-weekly market,a range of shops including boulangeries, épicieries, bars/restaurants and a twice-weekly market on Tuesdays and Fridays. The River Charente flows through the centre of the town and it is possible to hire kayaks to take a different form of travel! Attractions nearby include the Vallée des singes (monkey valley) a huge park where monkeys roam free, Futuroscope media and science park, the university city of Poitiers with its café culture and music festivals, cinemas and theatres. Yet you are only 1 3/4 hours from the coast and only 1 1/4 hours to Paris by fast TGV train from Poitiers. An excellent base from which to explore southwest France.
Getting around
It is best to hire a car which can be done locally or at one of the nearby airports. These include Poitiers fro flights to Stansted (35 minutes), Limoges (1 hour 25 minutes) for a range of UK flights year-round, La Rochelle (2 hours) and Bordeaux. The nearest ferry port is at Caen, but you can also fly into Charles de Gaulle in Paris and then take the direct train to Poitiers; a great way to travel. There are numerous car-hire agencies next to the train station. The local train station of Saint-Saviol is just 6 km away. Or why not bring your bike? There is excellent cycling and motor-biking roads throughout the region, with the classic car rally Rallye de Remparts taking part each year in Angouleme, just a 50 minute drive away.
