About the neighbourhood
Maison des Gardiols is located at the edge of a hamlet, Les Gardiols, which is attached to the tiny village of Joucas. A wonderful, peaceful medieval hill village with a market, a café, post office, several nearby restaurants including Michelin rated ones, Aside from the next-door lavender field and vineyard, the house lies among several of the most beautiful villages in France; Roussillon (3k); Gordes (8k); Goult (6K), Menerbes (8) are a few but so many unnamed are just as special . Away from tourists, our renters are able to escape from crowds to a location where they will experience true Provencal living. Renters frequently ask me if the house is within walking distance of the village. We always walk to Joucas. It about five minutes to the little market on the main street and even... more
Getting around
The principal way of getting around is by car. You will be located in what they call the golden triangle. The most beautiful villages in France are a short drive away. You will also want to visit the Roman ruins, the local markets, the ancient villages. All are a short drive away. You can bike to villages. We have four bikes at the house. You can bike to Roussillon or Apt or Goult. Mainly though, I imagine you'll rely on your car. Most major rental companies have outlets in the nearby villages.

Paris is the main point of entry into France but there are options. Our home is near Marseille, Aix and Avignon. Nice is about five hours away by highway. Marseille and Avignon are less than a one-hour drive. Nice and Marseille are international airports while Avignon supports local flights. Other, small airports can be found in the region. A TGV train is available at Charles De Gaulle airport and can whisk you to south France in less than four hours. Book the train ahead of time because French trains have reservations and are pretty full during vacation months as the crowded highways promotes arrival by rail. Also, the earlier you make your reservation, the better price you will find for your train ticket. A rental car is necessary and can be prearranged. Parking is available at th... more
