About the neighbourhood
ronbridge was named after the first Iron Bridge which was built by Abraham Darby III over the River Severn. It spans the river 100ft and was completed in 1779. In 1934 it was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and closed to vehicular traffic but tolls for pedestrians were collected until 1950, you can visit the old toll house. In 2017 the bridge under went a major 12 month restoration project costing £3.6 million and taking the bridge back to its original red paint colour as opposed to the black which it has been for many years. Today Ironbridge boasts 10 museums charting the industrial history of the area, the must see museum is at Blists Hill a complete Victorian Town with authentic shops and cottages of the era.
