Its many museums trace the town’s rich history and the great iron bridge itself serves as a dramatic memorial to its past. Today, Ironbridge has a wonderful cluster of craft and souvenir shops, some great bars and restaurants, and no less than ten museums spread along the banks of the River Severn. For those wishing to explore beyond the beauty of Ironbridge, there are many local towns of interest to discover: historic Bridgnorth, a town of two halves, is connected by a unique Victorian cliff railway, Madeley is home to a selection of listed buildings, most notably Madeley Court, while medieval Much Wenlock boasts half-timbered buildings, whipping posts and stocks. Beyond the towns, the countryside invites, with kayaking, canoeing, cycling, golf and fishing all available nearby. Walkers can explore the local footpaths and hills, or discover the stunning scenery that surrounds the celebrated ’Long Mynd’ or Long Mountain. Moreover, this area offers a wealth of castles, abbeys, gardens, parks and historic houses. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.More

About the neighbourhood
Ironbridge was named after the first Iron Bridge which was built by Abraham Darby III over the River Severn. It spans the river 100ft and was completed in 1779. In 1934 it was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and closed to vehicular traffic but tolls for pedestrians were collected until 1950, you can visit the old toll house. In 2017 the bridge under went a major 12 month restoration project costing £3.6 million and taking the bridge back to its original red paint colour as opposed to the black which it has been for many years. Today Ironbridge boasts 10 museums charting the industrial history of the area, the must see museum is at Blists Hill a complete Victorian Town with authentic shops and cottages of the era.
