The cottage is centrally heated with temp controlled Fischer radiators, separate electric hot water, free WIFI, freeview TV channels, Alexa/Amazon Echo entertainment and a coal fired BBQ outside to use if you wish.
There is also a small outside courtyard with established plants (and sparrows!) for you to enjoy your morning breakfast or afternoon cream tea.
*** Low ceiling alert *** for those lucky to live the high life!!
Please message us if you wish to rent both HOF COTTAGE & HOF HUT at the same time- for 4 adults (over 25yrs of age).
Please message us if you wish to have a longer stay- sometimes a great option for guests working away from home for example.
We opened our little gallery May 2016- which showcases local arts & crafts- paintings, ceramics, cards, knitwear and other textiles, rustic reclaimed frame making. Felt sculptures & pictures a speciality- commissions can be taken while you stay at the cottage!
We can also offer needle felting workshops so you can learn this creative artform and take home a little sculpture that you made.
Harpers Hill where Hillside Old Forge, HOF Cottage and HOF Gallery is situated, is a conservation area with Owls (barn and tawny), Bats, Rooks, Woodpeckers, Otters etc co-existing with the community. The cottage is surrounded by meadow fields and our cottage gardens making it an idyllic setting for some quality R&R. With little light pollution, when the night sky is clear, the Milky Way and the big starry skies of your childhood are here to see- with minimal obstruction. There is also the River Lew, a stone's throw from the cottage and a great place to paddle in on a hot Summer's day or even in Winter if you have to run in after your dog like I have! (ooops).More
You are renting HOF COTTAGE & small outside courtyard with table and two chairs.
Hof Hot Tub, Sun terrace and bar are sadly not available to guests renting HOF COTTAGE as they only now come with HOF HUT, unless you are renting both spaces together (HOF HUT & HOF COTTAGE).
There is limited head room in the lounge due to beams. 5ft 8 and under should give you clearance.
There are uneven cobbles in the outside seating area.

Northlew is a pretty former market village with many Grade II listed buildings /thatched cottages, surrounded by stunning scenery around the foothills of Dartmoor. The village can be found approx. 7 miles north west of Okehampton with its castle ruins (and Waitrose!) and 5 miles west of the ancient town of Hatherleigh (and its Ruby market every Tuesday). Bude and the North Cornish coast is 24miles west. The exclusive Dartmoor town of Chagford is 22 miles east, Launceston (15miles) and the pannier market town of Tavistock (18 miles)- to the South. Northlew is therefore in the middle of no-where but is central for everything! We have 1 general store where you can buy essentials, a post office on Fridays, a lovely pub - The Green Dragon.
How to get there
If you are coming via A30 its best not to take the first exit to Okehampton but the 2nd one- Sourton cross exit. Turn right onto A386 follow for a mile or so to first roundabout after the Manor hotel, turn right , keeping on the A386 you come to another roundabout where its signposted left to Northlew. Then after following the road for 200yards or so, 2nd left turn- again signposted Northlew and & the Grange. Follow this road for next 4-5 miles and you will arrive at Northlew. There is parking for 1 car at HOF Cottage.
