About the neighbourhood
Ten minutes’ drive from Robertson you will find the small rural village of McGregor, set within the a valley surrounded by the hills of the Langeberg mountains. McGregor was established in 1862 (original name, Lady Grey). It was renamed McGragor in 1905 in honor of Andrew McGregor who had been the minister of the Dutch Reformed Church of the Robertson District for 40 years. McGregor is a popular tourist destination due to its remote location and old world charm. This small village is characterised by whitewashed cottages with lovely gardens. The old stone irrigation channels are still providing water to the gardens of the towns inhabitant. Hiking trails like the Boesmanskloof hiking trail, between McGregor and Greyton is very popular. Very special places to visit during your stay are Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, Vrolijkheid Nature reserve and the wine farms around McGregor.
Getting around
There are no public transport to the town and you will thus need a car. Most people love walking around in town to the shops and some of the nature walks around town. It is a small town.
How to get there
Drive on the N1 from Cape Town to Worcestor (90km). Drive through the town and follow the signs to Robertson (R60). At Robertson, take a right turn at the four-way stop in the main street. Follow the road to Mcgregor (20km). (If you come via the N2, take the Swellendam turnoff and follow the road to Robertson. ) Immediately after entering the town of McGregor , you will see a brown sign that reads, 'Mcgregor Country Cottages'. Turn into the automatic greengate and follow a private road past the trees. The cottage is at the end of the road, in the orchard (about 200m). The street address is No. 7 Voortrekker st., but the cottage is not in Voortrekker st. You will need to go into the private road to get to the cottage.
