Lovely old traditional croft house situated in the small elevated hamlet of Badnellan two miles from the coastal town of Brora with the spectacular combination of mountain and panoramic sea views across the Dornoch and Moray Firths. Dorus Dearg ('Red Door') was built in 1881 and has been in our family since the mid 1930's. Over the years it has been refurbished and enlarged sympathetically to its present comfortable condition. A double and a twin bedroom, both with wash basins, and an outside annexe with twin beds (no internal access), allow accommodation for up to 6 guests. There is a sitting room with an open fire and dining area with bay window from which to enjoy the scenery. There is one bathroom, with bath and shower and a good kitchen. The whole property is in good order and stands in its own several acres of woodland and pasture. Well positioned for walking, fishing, bird watching, golf and the beach this is an ideal location for family, sporting and recreational holidays. fishing on the rivers Brora and Helmsdale, and on the many nearby lochs is available through local agents. Sea fishing is also easily arranged. Even if you are not too successful with your catches, the surrounding magical countryside more than makes up for it! Birdlife is plentiful, with both inland native species and large numbers of sea birds at shore and sea-loch. The local golf links in Brora is a well laid out course in a magnificent setting overlooking the sea and only a few minutes drive away. Brora is one of several attractive towns on the UK's most north-easterly coastline linked by the A9 from Inverness to the south and John O'Groats to the north. There is a working harbour, variety of shops including a well stocked supermarket and several restaurants and cafes. There is even an Italian ice cream parlour dating from the second world war! The golf course and harbour are both a short walk from the town centre. Weekly bookings Sunday to Sunday or short breaks by arrangement.More

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

We know the area well, having lived there a while ago. We had high hopes and were pleased to see it was in a particularly beautiful spot. Once inside though our excitement soon waned. The cottage itself is lovely. The view is to die for, however for various reasons we just couldn't stay. We made a coffee and turned on the heating. The crockery was in a cupboard where there were obvious cobwebs and insect larvae cases on the floor. OK it's the country and these things happen ( we live in a cottage ourselves so are aware of the difficulties),but it was quite off putting. There was only one single radiator in the living room, not enough to heat a room that size, so it didn't noticably change the temperature. I sat on a chair for a few minutes and felt damp. The glass door leading to the hall was broken and filthy, and the bathroom, don't really know what to say. I will say that this place has loads of potential with a bit of deep cleaning, and updating. Might be better in warmer weather when heating and indoor comfort isn't such an issue. We should have told the caretaker next door but at the time, being on holiday, we didn't want to offend or cause stress so locked up and left.

What a quirky, authentic, homey croft! As I stood at the farm sink in the kitchen I was transported back in time to my grandmother's house and the warmth I always felt when I was there. And even though this sounds silly, I loved the interior doors! You have to be there to understand what I mean. What a pleasure it was to be greeted by the sheep in the morning and to bid them goodnight at bedtime. The community is welcoming and friendly - all around a wonderful place!

Lovely quiet location and scenic views.Village and beach are close by but you will need a car to get to them (about two miles or so).Good food served at the local pub. The Croft is quite dated but very comfortable and has every thing you will need for your stay but no dish washer. We will visit again as the bonus for us is that our relations live right next door.

Stayed here for a week with my partner and in laws. From the moment we walked in the door we instantly felt the history and the character of the place which was further enhanced by the amazing views and surroundings of the croft. I would definitely recommend it. The village is friendly and has a shop, bakers and a general store and the beach is award winning and beautiful.

The cottage was lovely very old fashioned, wonderful kitchen. Comfortable beds .Situated in beautiful settings. Wonderful views. Very nice little village, with good food shopping, needs a chippy tho. Good location for exploring countryside. Enjoyed car ride through the highlands on way to John 'O Croats. All in all a very nice holiday, shame family problems occurred and we had to leave early. Would go back again.

We liked it to stay at Dorus Dearg. It's a lovely Cottage. Very well equipped with everything one could need - from wide range of cooking pots, board games, to local maps and guides and even a sewing kit. We had some problems with the central heating, but as we were on tour, it was not a problem for us. There was plenty of hot water for the shower. It's a good place for two adults for touring the Highlands.

The second time we have rented this cottage for a week whilst fishing the River Brora. Great location in Badnellan off the road up Strath Brora, Quiet, except the sheep and lambs, adequately furnished, well equipped kitchen, drawers full of location information, lovely open fire, good central heating and more than enough hot water for two hot baths on our return from the river. We think its great. 5 minutes by car to Brora where there are shops, Restaurants and Pubs.

This property is a late 19th century high quality "arts and crafts" croft-type cottage. It has not been updated, and is in need of repairs and maintenance - for example a gutter to the annex has come away from its drain-pipe, its window is rotten, and the annex bedroom feels damp. That said, the main part of the cottage is dry and very characterful and is beautifully situated one mile to the west of Brora, just off the lane to Brora Loch. The cottage has a wonderful "lived in" feel, allowing you to sense the kinds of people who lived here in the past, and has the benefit (or disadvantage) of charming period furniture, fixtures, and crockery (though there is also more modern crockery if you prefer). Guests can enjoy a log fire on cold evenings, you are greeted by an array of fishing tackle, and the cottage is surrounded with sheep and wonderful views. Despite its obvious faults, we would absolutely love to come again, and for an authentic Highland experience, it cannot be bettered.
