Location.  Farmington is located in western Maine, in the foothills of the Longfellow Mountains. It is located along the Sandy River in southern Franklin County, and is its shire town (county seat) and most populous town at around 8000 people. 

Transportation.  The Farmington area is primarily accessed by car. The closest scheduled air service is in Augusta (AUG), just under 40 miles to the southeast, but more service is available through Bangor (BGR) or Portland (PWM), each about two hours away.   Greyhound bus service is also available in Augusta at the Augusta State Airport. Portland is the closest location for rail service with Amtrak's Downeaster to Boston.  Private planes could go to Augusta, Waterville, or to the closest airfield to Farmington in Norridgewock.

The closest freeway to Farmington is Interstate 95, which passes about 35 miles to the southeast and goes through Waterville and Augusta. Farmington is served by US 2 (which goes west to New Hampshire and Vermont, and east to Skowhegan), State Highways 27 (which goes north to the Canadian border and south to Augusta and the coast),  4 (which goes north, as well as south to the Maine Turnpike at Auburn) and 43.
