Founded in 1843, Des Moines is the capital of the state of Iowa, and also its largest city- home to 200,000 people. Its nearby cities include Altoona, Ankeny, West Des Moines, and Clive which together with others make up the Greater Des Moines area. Des Moines was originally a Fort, built on the intersection of the Racoon and Des Moines Rivers, and is now the seat of Polk County and the intersection point of Interstates I-80 and I-235.

The Floods of 1993 threatened the city, but left it stronger, and development continues, both with a downtown renaissance and in the suburbs.
