Even though Destin was only incorporated as a city in 1984, its history goes back to the 7th century when Native Americans lived there. Archaeologically, Destin is extremely interesting because of the numerous Indian artifacts that have been uncovered.

In the 16th and 17th centuries Destin was visited by Spanish explorers and it was first drawn on a map by Don Franisco Tapia who was charting the coast of Florida.

Fishing, which is one of the most defining characteristics of today's Destin has its roots in 1845 when Leonard Destin, its first settler arrived from Connecticut. He and future settlers made a living off fishing along Destin's East Pass.

Destin is commonly known as "The World's Luckiest Fishing Village"
