Bandar Seri Begawan is a fairly safe place to visit.  Having said this, there are certain precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a smooth trip through the capital city of Brunei Darussalam .  Like always, common sense is the most important tool to be used in staying safe.

            There are certain diseases and illnesses that can be dangerous in Brunei Darussalam.  Make sure to consult a doctor a few months before departing to ensure having gotten the proper vaccinations and immunizations.

            Avoid walking alone at night (especially women).  This is a general recommendation for any unfamiliar area, but should be followed in Bandar Seri Begawan as well.  If staying with a group is not an option and walking is unavoidable, try to remain in lighted, public areas.

            Although street crimes, burglaries, and petty thefts are not major concerns in Bandar Seri Begawan , they do happen.  However, most of these situations can be avoided using a few simple rules.  Avoid carrying around large amounts of money or looking extremely flashy.  Drawing un-needed attention is never a good idea.  Lock all car doors and roll up windows when leaving valuables behind in a car.  Keep a close eye on valuables in crowded, public areas, such as bus and train stations, as well as markets.  These are areas where pickpockets operate. 

            Demonstrations, protests and mass gatherings that occur in major public areas are rare, but they do happen.  Avoid these situations as they can be dangerous.
