Countless marshes and approximately 7,000 swamps cover roughly 20% of Estonian territory, so it’s no wonder that they’re among the most popular natural “attractions” in Estonia.

Swamps are great for hiking, picking berries and bird-watching (such as the European golden plover and the whimbrel). Wild animals can be spotted wandering around too.

Please bear in mind though that swamps can be rather dangerous for people with little local experience, so never hike alone. You also might consider taking a guide.

The so-called and extraordinary 5th season exists in Soomaa National Park during spring - the snow melts so fast that the whole area floods and can only be travelled by boat.
