Pisa is served by the Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei), which is located less than one mile from the city of Pisa. Since the airport is located on the coast and easily accessible by major motorways and rail lines, it is relatively easy to get to/from the city center.
A car rental is one method of transportation, since there are many companies located at the airport offering a fleet of cars, vans, minibuses and campers. Getting to and from Pisa Airport by car is easy since it is located on the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno motorway. It takes approximately 10 minutes to drive between the airport and the city of Pisa.
Car hire desks are in a separate building and there is a free shuttle bus running from the airport to the building. It's important to know this because if some of your party stay in the airport to collect baggage, you will need to arrange where to pick them up. Equally, coming back, you will need to drop off baggage and passengers at departures, drive out to the hire car area, return the car and complete the paperwork and then get the bus back to the airport. If you find a considerable queue for the shuttle bus it is possible to walk to the car hire desks in less than 10 minutes on the level - the route is marked on the pavement beyond the shuttle bus stop.
The Europcar desk is particularly busy at this airport, and there can be long delays in collecting a car even if it has been pre-booked in good time. The delays are such that Europcar operate a system whereby you collect a ticket on arrival at the building where the car hire desks are situated and then wait your turn. The numbers waiting to collect cars can be greatly in excess of those waiting at other desks, perhaps because of the connection between Europcar and Easyjet. Therefore, if you book with Europcar, you should factor in to your journey time a considerable wait in the car hire rental building.

Another convenient method of travel is by train. The rail terminal is located a mere 40 meters outside the airport’s departures terminal; an easy walk. Rail service connects to the Pisa Central Station, from which many other connections for other destinations throughout Italy are available, if needed.
Taxi service is also available, which is run by CO.TA.PI (Pisa taxi cooperative). Expect to pay around EUR5.00 to EUR7.00 , between the airport and city of Pisa (there is an additional fee of EUR 2,07 for Sundays and Bank Holidays),
To save a little money, catch a ride on the collective taxi service, which departs every ten minutes between the Pisa International Airport and the city’s train station or Leaning Tower. Expect to pay approximately EUR 2.50 to the Train Station or EUR 4.00 to the Leaning Tower.
Bus travel is also available and an economical method of transportation. The bus from/to the Leaning Tower leaves every 10-15 minutes from just outside the terminal, taking about 10 minutes. The next stop is shown on an electronic display near the driver and will show "piazza de miracoli" for the tower. The bus has a red LAM written on the side with "L/R" on the front display. Tickets can be bought either from the driver or from the bus/train information desk in the terminal. Tickets are EUR 1.90 return. The bus also stops at the train station.
