We got what we wanted to ^_^
Low season is a good choice here, because the whole beach is yours. We felt like on an uninhabited island. We were in the Sunset Bungalow 1 and the sunset was amazing in front of this place. The beach is a bit rocky around the hotel but next to Sunset Bungalow 1 there is a sandy beach where you can easily enjoy the sun and the sea. We didn't even get any bite from bugs but the door should be kept closed for avoiding bug huntings at night.
We read a lot of bad comments about the food but I can say it is totally O.K. The breakfast is cheap and you can find everything what you want, and the main foods are delicious, maybe not the best, but for the price is perfectly fine.
The staff is very kind and the room was clean.
5 points for Ao Kao Resort ;)

Room tip: Sunset Bungalow 1 is the best

3* and nothing more

This is our 4th island stop on this our 3rd visit to Thailand and Ao has failed to impress me. There is no ‘front of house’ to great you on arrival. Throughout our stay staff were were courteous though give impression of being very lackadaisical - guess to be expected in such a laid back environment.

The rooms are clean which is probably my number 1 priority though there is no hot water for a shower. With a bit of effort it could be a far more appealing complex.

The grounds to the hotel are not kept and whilst the rooms are of a good size the buildings are rather depressing to look at. Furniture is tired looking and whilst a nice feature the roof terrace was shabby with paint splashed everywhere, unkept potted plants and no cushions for wicker bed or chair. There is a hammock which is nice.

The beach to the right of resort is long but covered in washed up algae along with loads of litter. Surprising as the resort ‘subscribes’ to Trash Heroes which is a voluntary project organising beach cleans! As a subscriber I would also expect the hotel to acknowledge its corporate social responsibilities by leading by example and provide water in glass bottles and not provide straws with drinks.

The sea water is not enticing at all and signs up for jelly fish discouraged me from swimming, aside from it being very rocky under foot. The pool is equally uninspiring and real more of a large paddling pool.

There are no sun beds only uncomfortable deck chairs and given the hotel information booklet informs you that the beach has sandflies you’re tempted to make the most of your room terrace!

On our first day at Ao music from another island not too far away pounded out all afternoon till the early hours of the morning.....sounded like a great party but as I wasn’t invited the racket totally infuriated me and disturbed the peace and tranquility I had come for.

The restaurant is poor. Cups and plates are chipped. Whilst staff are very pleasant the food in the evening was awful, served cold and tasted nothing like we expected. Food took at least 25 mins to arrive. My meal came first - chicken cashew which tasted mostly of fish sauce - followed some 10 mins later by the chicken satay starter and my partner’s sweet and sour chicken main dish neither of which tasted very nice. Breakfast was slightly better.

The hotel is ‘remote’ though taxis can be arranged.

In short I’ll be glad to leave Ao. As I write two geckos have appeared in the room ......not sure how they got in.....music continues to pound across the bay joined by a local dog which is now barking in accompaniment to the music outside the front of our room. It’s 11.45pm. To be fair Ao wasn’t our hotel of choice which unfortunately could only accommodate us for one night. I’d like to say ‘I guess you get what you pay for‘ but we paid over £100 a night excluding breakfast which isn’t cheap cheap

Ao Ko Mak

Mediocre Resort

First impressions of the resort was a feeling we’d come across an army camp or a small council housing estate. All the villas had bare concrete walls and all looked the same (tick-tacky boxes spring to mind). Oddly stuck on the top was a seating area with grass roofs looking decidedly out-of-place. The gardens went someway to break up the monotony but I found the gardens to be not particularly well kempt compared with other resorts on the island.
There were signs everywhere of the resort looking a bit tired. Rotting planks and a half-filled rancid pond just left to rot which once would have looked nice.

The rooms/villas:
They were even worse inside than outside. A boring drab box for a bed-sit with no décor, cheap and nasty lights and absolutely appalling furniture such as cupboards with doors that didn’t fit properly and drawers with no handles which one struggled to open and close..
There’s no phone in the room so you can’t contact reception or order room-service, and if you want the room cleaned you have to go down to the restaurant and leave your key in a box. This means if you want to hang on to your key for any reason, your room isn’t going to get serviced. A totally daft system. Why not just have notes to hang on the doors to request servicing like any other hotel?
By far the worst thing about the so-called villa is the bathroom /shower and toilet area. Who ever designed this bit deserves shooting!
There’s a set of sliding doors to the washbasin area which also houses the kettle and another sliding door to the shower cubicle all with bare concrete wall I hasten to add. Why no door to the toilet?
However, what is particularly bizarre is the fact there is NO privacy at all to anyone using the toilet. There’s only a tatty set of shells on string that does not screen anything. This means anyone wishing to use the washbasin or put the kettle on has a full view of anyone on the toilet.
If this wasn’t enough, even more bizarre was a rectangular hole in the concrete wall separating the shower and the toilet meaning anyone using the toilet has complete full view of anyone using the shower and vice-versa anyone having a shower can watch someone else on the toilet. Why no obscure glass? Horrible!
On top of each concrete block is a roof area with a couple of loungers. Here again, very tatty. There are gaping holes in the grass roof and one of the live switches to the lights up there was in pieces revealing bare live contacts.
The food and restaurant:
Where to start? Well, for starters the buffet breakfast are simply appalling. All you get a choice of is cold streaky bacon, French toast, some lukewarm Thai dish in watered down sauce and cold boiled rice. There’s bread & butter and some fruit and that’s about it; dreadful 2-star rubbish, and to make it worse it’s the same every morning; no variation at all.
The evening meals aren’t much better and way overpriced so eat elsewhere whenever possible. This would explain why the restaurant was empty every evening
On a positive note, most of the staff are polite and very helpful.
This not good value for money particularly as it’s one of the most expensive resorts on Koh Mak.
The Beach Bar is OK and serve some delicious baguettes. The staff here are great also.

The beach is lovely, but it is NOT white sand as the resort’s name implies, it’s golden. The beach is cleared of washed-up debris every day but you only have to walk down the beach some way to see the horrific scale of plastic rubbish that has been washed up.
The final insult came when we checked out. We were informed that the horrible breakfasts were NOT included and were told we had to cough up 100Baht/person for each day of our stay making a total of 2000Baht. This was in spite of the in-room information booklet stating that breakfasts WERE included. This dispute is on-going at time of writing.
I’ve travelled the length and breadth of Thailand and stayed at many of the islands such as Koh Wai, Koh Kood, Koh Chang and Koh Tao and found the accommodations good. I’m also married to a Thai and have a house here, so I’m well versed to be able to comment.
White Sands resort is, at best, a 3-star resort. Oh yes, as said, the sand is not white, it’s golden.

A nice and quiet hotel on the beach. The restaurant is beautifully located by the sea and the surroundings are very nice. We had a bungalow with sea view and that is definitely worth the extra cost since the location of the other bungalows where not so nice. The room and the bathroom was spacious and the bed was nice and soft. The breakfast buffet was nice with a good variety. The staff was very friendly! The downside was actually both the beach and the swimming pool. In the afternoon there was low tide and very shallow waters and the water was warm and not very clean. There was a lot of rocks in the water. The sun chairs where not very comfortable. The pool was very small and with no view at all and very little space for sunbathing. We hired a moterbike and went to another beach on the island called Laemson which was very nice.

My wife and I stayed here with another couple only for 4 days, we arrived by speed boat from Koh Chang a lady asked us where we were staying she then pointed us in the direction of a chap with a trolly who promptly took our bags, off the pier we went into the laid on taxi we arrived at Ao Kao in 10 mins our bags were unloaded and we were taken to reception given a lovely cooling drink.
Everything was explained to us all food drinks motorbike hire everything could be booked to our room so no need to carry cash.
Our room was a lovely see front villa with a roof top terrace (their picture on the website don’t do them justice) it was like having our own private beach (Sunset 2 was ours and it was in my view the best location so try to ask for it)
The staff here are brilliant we ate and drank as a 4 but each drink and meal was allocated separately without us having to say which room they knew who everyone was nothing was too much trouble ever any request was sorted simply smoothly they should send other resort staff here to learn a thing or two
In one bar/eatery they didn’t serve gin or vodka only beers wines and soft drinks .... answer go buy your own and drink it in there bar they were not bothered.
We hired a bike for the day and anyone never ridden abroad like me this is a great place to learn very very quiet lots of beautiful places to find some harder than others but all worth the little bit of extra effort.
After 4 sun filled days we had to check out we had cash so got a 3% discount on our bill as we hadn’t been keeping tabs on what we’d spent we were a little unsure we knew our stay was to cost £428 but then meals and drinks were to be added when in was totalled and the discount added it came to less than £500 so £125 per day for a couple to live in paradise and be so well looked after oh and that included the bike hire and then taking us to another pier to catch our boat onto our next location.
Would I recommend this place 100% yes, we will return.
Thank you so much for looking after us
