Our group of 4 couples spent two nights at El Establo. We were in the 500 rooms a little more than halfway up the hill the complex is built on and the closest rooms to the pool and bar area. The rooms were comfortable and as was mentioned in other reviews does not have AC. I called the front desk and they sent a very good fan to the room. Even without it the temperatures at night were comfortable. The rooms have a small balcony but no chairs outside and only 1 inside. When we stepped outside to admire the amazing view we were greeted by a coati wandering around outside beneath our balcony. The pool is smallish and not heated. The adjacent bar area serves good drinks but there is not enough seating area. One nice touch is a make your own happy hour. You pick the hour you want it and you get 2 for 1 drinks. We tried taking their hiking trails at the very top of the mountain and they are not well maintained and the signage is not good. We usually took the free shuttle up to our room and walked down. The shuttles are quick and frequent. The restaurant was average for the lunch we had there. For dinner one night we took the 10 minute walk to Don Luis which was very good and then took a cab the next night to the center of town and ate at the Treehouse which was excellent. The included breakfasts were good with good variety. The only problem was getting to the restaurant one morning at 7:30 and it was a mob scene so plan your timing accordingly. We took a tour to the Cloud Forest Reserve (booked through the hotel) where a hotel employee, Ronnie, was our guide. He was outstanding in every way and dedicated to preserving his country. When we saw him at the hotel later that evening I related that I still hadn't seen a sloth that was actually awake and moving and he brought us up to where he had seen one earlier and we did get a chance to see it (although in the low light and 50 feet up a tree). It is people like him that make a place special and helps create good memories.

Room tip: The 500 level rooms are a good choice for views and closeness to the pool and bar area but not so close that you can hear them.

While staying at this beautiful hotel, my son accidentally fell through the window and cut himself quite badly. The staff was outstanding! Within minutes the manager was with us and in just a few more minutes the doctors were there and treated him right in the room. The hotel covered the cost of the doctors and the window. Top notch! Thank you!

There is nothing exactly wrong with this hotel but overall I was glad I was only there for 1 night. The bedrooms are in large chalet blocks, we were in the 500's half way up the property (10 min walk down a steep hill for breakfast). The chalet's are designed so that everyone gets a great view of the mountains, but that means they are all situated along a long corridor which echoes and vibrates with every noise. The bathroom has a levered small window which couldn't be closed as it was so high up and this was between the bathroom and the corridor so the noise came straight through into my room. The room itself was well appointed, spotless and the bed very comfy. I just can't imagine wandering over this property when staying here for longer, in some ways it was actually too big.

Stayed in April for 1 night in building 700s.

Pros- Great view, clean room.

Neutral- No AC, but maybe most hotels in Monteverde do not have it.

Cons- Hotel website says "ONE INDOOR TEMPERED SWIMMING POOL". It is a covered, open air swimming pool, so it is definitely not "INDOOR" as there are no doors involved. When we were there, the pool is not heated, so people can stay in the pool for at most a few minutes in the mid afternoon.
Also at around 6am, there was little to no water (yes, I mean no water) for about 20 min. I figure it's probably because everyone else is taking a shower, so buildings at lower levels have better water pressure?
Finally the shades need some work. Gaps between shades are large enough people can see it from the outside.

The rooms are beautiful and have balconies with lovely views. Rooms 100-300 are pretty close to the lobby/restaurant , 400-500 are about a 10 min walk up the side of a mountain and 600-900 are about 15-20 min walk up the hill. There is a shuttle van but if you prefer to walk around and have small kids it’s easier to be closer to the main buildings. Breakfast was busy and average. The pool is ok for an afternoon but not the most exciting. Staff was friendly and helpful.
