We loved the Hotel Belmar from the get go. Without exception every member of staff was friendly, chatty and welcoming. The rustic alpine style of the hotel is warm, cosy and charming. Food-wise every meal we had was delicious, with a good variety of options. Only breakfast was slightly limited, being a menu rather than a buffet, although this did mean the quality was excellent. Our first floor room in the main building (second floor for Americans!) was beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The balcony overlooking the grounds and the cloud forest was the perfect place to enjoy one of the hotel's own beers, brewed on site. The one downside of our room was the bathroom sink being in the main room rather than separated with the toilet and shower.

A huge benefit of the hotel is the access to their private guides. Our tour of the Monteverde reserve extended by well over an hour as the guide went over and above to ensure we saw everything we possibly could on what started out as quite a quiet tour. We were not disappointed! We also went horse trekking from the hotel's own farm, which was a great way to see more of the Costa Rican countryside and enjoy the relaxed pace of life. Again, our guide went out of his way to ensure we had a great time, showing us the cheese making workshop and other parts of the farm as well. Both were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their country. I wish I could remember their names!

It's also easy to get a taxi into the main town and back. I can't recommend Hotel Belmar enough, it really was one of the highlights of our trip.

This place exceeded all of our expectations. Hotel Belmar organized our transfer from the airport and then worked with us when our flight was delayed and the driver was waiting when we got off late. We did the night tour through the hotel as well and were not disappointed.

Rooms: we stayed in the chalet and the views are beautiful. We had coffee outside and it was the perfect relaxing start.

Hotel: they offer a juice and tea bar in the chalet which was very nice. It had an afternoon tea vibe and there are also yoga classes offered. The restaurant is good. They also have tico time which is like happy hour and there are snack options as well. The view for the sunset is outstanding.

Do not hesitate- nothing to regret or wish for here.

Loved this place! Shocked at some reviews - such 1st world whingeing. In its stunning location, this hotel offers old world charm, combined with delightful service. The 'lack'(!?!)of air-con mentioned by some is ridiculous- like going to paradise up over dirt track roads, high in the cloud forest & expecting a hermetically sealed slice of western life, while remaining oblivious to the glorious gardens, views, enchanting buildings & lovely people.
Our trip, 1st thing in the morning into the cloud rain forest was an unforgettable delight. Our guide was so passionate, informed & witty & could not have been more helpful. Just take all advice offered - stout shoes, long trousers & warm-ish top. And if your guide warns you about any snakes you encounter- pay heed! The nearest hospital is over 2hrs away. Don't be like the idiot woman in our party, trying to stick her phone camera right in the face of a sleeping, lethal snake, putting us all at risk!

We spent 3 nights here and absolutely loved it! The hotel bar terrace has spectacular views and we were so happy to enjoy a cocktail here watching the sun set. The restaurant is excellent and we particularly enjoyed the fabulous a la carte breakfasts. The staff were friendly and attentive and our room was wonderful with lots of chalet style wooden features. The hotel was a wonderful self-guide nature trail behind it, very peaceful and perfect for spotting wildlife including an armadillo 2 days on the trot!
The location of the hotel is ideal for visiting the nearby Monteverde cloud forest which was magical, made extra special by our private guide Jesus who was so knowledgeable
