My wife Donna and I just returned from an 18 day vacation in Roatan. Fortunately for us, we were staying within walking distance of the Ibagari hotel and restaurant. Over the course of 18 days, we ate at Ibagari about 30 times having breakfast, lunch, dinner and a Sunday brunch. After the second visit, we set up a standing reservation for dinner every night at 7:00 pm. You need to make reservations at this restaurant; they were usually fully booked at dinner.

The atmosphere of this hotel is off the scale in both form and function. It looks like something that stepped off the pages of architectural digest. There is music playing everywhere around the entire facility in the background. One Friday night, they had live music with an amazing singer and guitar player. You really have to see Ibargari to get a full appreciation of the facility. The views from every location are spectacular. We did take a tour of a room one day and it was amazing. I have attached a few pictures of our time at Ibagari.

The Food

The food at this hotel is unbelievable and the service we received was outstanding. Over the course of 30 meals, we tried to order every item on the menu. However, we could not do that because we kept coming back to dishes we had previously ordered that had now become favorite dishes. We probably ordered about 70% of the menu items and they were delicious. Most of the dishes are served with several sauces and they really make the dish. The presentation of the plates was also beautiful. Each time we ordered a new item, we were not disappointed.

The Service

The service we received was exceptional and the staff was very accommodating. Over the course of our 30 meals, we got to know the name of each staff member. Cathy was always there to greet us with a smile. We received outstanding service from Gonzalo, Darwin, Jessie, Fernando, Joanna, Odessa, Osman; I am probably spelling some of these names wrong. Even though we were not staying in this hotel, they treated us like we were. These people are highly dedicated to making sure you have an outstanding dining experience, and they succeeded every time. We also met Thelma, who is the manager of the hotel, who was very kind. They made us a lot of specialty drinks which we enjoyed. Make sure you order a rum drink called “It’s too good to be true”; I think Gonzalo created this new concoction. The quality of the food and the service made this our regular hang out. Often after a meal, we would sit out on the patio by the reflecting pool, listen to the music and have coffee and dessert. They have a crepe that is filled with Nutella and strawberries, and a scrumptious brownie that were among our favorites.

After a meal, I would often stop by the kitchen and tell the staff how much we enjoyed our food. We met the main Chef; I do not remember his name, but I can tell you that he is a gastronomical genius.

Dive Shop

They have a great dive shop onsite (Duna Divers) run by a really nice guy named Dennis. We went out with them to go snorkeling on two occasions with Lucas and Sara. Everyone at the dive shop was extremely helpful and very conscientious. They took us to some unbelievable snorkeling sites.

Leaving a tip suggestion

As we all know, in the United States tipping for a meal is usually 15% - 20%, or more if the service is outstanding. At Ibagari, a 10% tip is automatically included in your bill. I paid for my meals with a credit card, and I was surprised to see that there was no place on the receipt I signed to include additional money for a tip beyond the 10% already included, like there is in the U.S. I inquired about this with the staff and they told me that they could run my credit card again for a separate amount for an additional tip, or we could leave cash for the additional tip amount. In my case, I just made sure I had cash to leave at the end of each meal. My point is, you are at a high end luxury hotel and restaurant, and these are professional hardworking local people that provide excellent service; make sure you leave them a tip that is commensurate with the service your received.

Recommendation

Don’t miss out on one of the best meals you can eat in Rotan, in one of the nicest environments on Roatan. This place is spectacular and we are both looking forward to eating there again.

This place has the perfect combination of good atmosphere and delicious food. We came in by boat and spent a romantic evening at the restaurant--bottle of wine, gourmet (but not overpriced) food, desserts, and after-dinner drinks in comfy chairs on the beach. We didn't stay at the hotel, but we used Duna Divers for a family dive trip the next day. Francheska did an amazing job with our kids and gave them a personalized experience to remember. If we ever come back to Roatan, this would be the place to stay!

Incredible, hotel with spectacular views of sunset, incredible staff members we stayed 9 days and every day was always special, the pool was really relaxing and the staff was always there to wait on your every need.
Restaurant is the best in the Roatan area, from the start of the day with delicious breakfast to snorkeling right in front of the hotel and with their experienced staff for training you for scuba diving and for fishing they do know where to take you so you can enjoy your fishing experience.

Room Tip: If it is available ask for the Hati the best!
