A choice is offered of hotel style accommodation or a nearby cottage. Our room was clean and comfy, staff were attentive. The breakfasts are buffet style which works very well. Evening meals are taken around one large table thus a mix of nationalities add to the atmosphere. Staff speak English and one or two also speak German. Evening meals are also available and highly recommended in nearby Prazeres. All together a quiet and pleasant area. The nearby hills offer good walking.

We came home unsure what the Quinta was trying to be...a four star hotel, or a walking centre...
We went in February to find some sun,and enjoyed some good walks in the levadas of Madeira. The vineyard Quinta is well positioned for this, and is also close to the west coast, but is not alone in this.
We used one of the cottages in the grounds which gave freedom to come and go, and mix self catering with visiting local restaurants, but we were disappointed with the basic quality of the accommodation...ok to return to after a strenuous walk, but we have found some British youth hostels more comfortable.
If you are going in the winter, you may be as lucky as we were with the sun, but beware those cold Atlantic winds...the cottages are not draught proof!
Plusses were the friendliness of staff; the ability to light a fire (wood is for sale)and the very hot water for baths!
Warning: if staying in the cottages at the bottom of the site, the walk up to the main house (reception, breakfast, dining room...)is along a path with very steep sections and rough underfoot. Guests who are less mobile may find this difficult.
Some local restaurants offer excellent food including Madeiran dishes...try O Chico`s in Prazeres for its excellent cooking and warm welcome. The kitchen of the Quinta was closed for refurbishment during our visit, so we cannot comment on catering.

I was looking for a remote place. And this is what I found. No big tourism, nothing fancy. It's self catering (but with fresh bread rolls hanging on the door every morning and a starter kit in the kitchenette, you can also join the dinner) but very homely. Gorgeous little cottages in an old wine yard. Lovely hosts (thanks Yvonne) and an easy and cozy place to start your everyday activities. I can definitely recommend this place.

Friendly staff, all spoke English and quite a few German. Rooms and grounds are clean and well maintained. Dinners in the garden were excellent with great wine list. Pool was small, but large enough for some laps.

When we saw pictures of Quinta das Vinhas we booked a room immediately- and it is every bit as lovely in reality! The Quinta isn't directly located anywhere near the action which was what we intended, but mentioned here in case someone else doesn't. It commands a magnificent view instead over the gardens and surrounding vineyards down to the sea. From there you can also see (and reach via path) the additional appartments.
The Quinta used to be a residence before being converted to a hotel and there are many charming details and furniture pieces that remain. There even is a small tour and introduction to the history Fridays at 5pm.
The rooms are beautiful and ours had a view over the gardens to the sea. In the house there is a living room/sitting area with the wifi zone. In addition there are various places outside in the gardens with chairs.
Breakfast is a good selection and set up in the former kitchen, but can also be taken to the tables just outside. The homemade joghurt and fresh fruit plates are especially worth mentioning. Coffee and tea can be prepared during the day.
Dinner is offered as well with the three course menu for the day listed and reservations can be made until 5pm. Special wishes such as vegetarian alternatives can be requested. Dinner was served inside at this time of year and very tasty on both occasions where we took part. The menu is seasonal and fresh products are used which you can taste. The wine list was very nice and other beverages can be ordered as well.
If you are interested in Madeira wines and the local spirits, a tasting is offered where you can sample three different varieties (7€ for the wines) which can also be bought at the reception.
The night sky is amazing with all the stars you can see after the sundown which is also (at least partially) viewable.
In summary we had a wonderful stay and felt very welcome since everybody was really nice and helpful - thank you for making our stay special and sharing this hidden gem with guests!
