We stayed a week. Quiet serenity away from the tourist crowds. A great base for independent traveler to explore the central CR coast, not too far from Jaco in case you need a night out on the town. Amazing views, lots of parrots and an occasional monkey. Friendly, helpful hosts, accommodated our special dietary requests. Home-baked bread and breakfast crepes. The pool house is nice and private and the pool at night is awesome.

Some guides indicate that there are no hotels near Carara N.P., but this Bed and Breakfast is only a few miles away and it's wonderful. The owner's home sits high above the highway from San Jose to the southern Pacific coast, very near the bridge over the Tarcoles River where the crocodiles have been trained to hang out. Down some steep steps from their home, the owners have a lovely swimming pool, garden, and pool bungalow that they rent out. Best of all, after spending the morning trying to get a glimpse of scarlet macaws in Carara (and having limited success) we could sit in what seemed like our own private paradise and wait for them to fly right over us.

Our accommodation was a large room with lovely attached bath, and a large porch next to a relatively large pool. Since they only rent out the one space, the pool ends up being basically just for you.

The next morning we were served homemade crepes, with butter, jam and fresh fruit up on the porch of the main house where we could stare in amazement at the lovely view of the forest, the river, and the Pacific.

We stayed here for 3 nights, it was probably the best stay during our trip in CR. very nice owners, breakfast was lovely (crêpes!), nice pool. Lots of macaws flying over. Close to PN Carara.
Try to stay more than 1 night, you will love it.

Rancho Capulin is not located near any typical major tourist destination, but is a nice alternative to Jaco while making your way south from the airport to Manuel Antonio. Claudine is a gracious host and makes a very nice breakfast. The guesthouse is very nicely appointed poolhouse. There are plenty of nice touches like a fridge (conveniently stocked with several different beverages for a small cost), mosquito netting, multiple ceiling fans, etc.
The only negative is that there isn't much close by...some small soda shops and fruit stands...but you need to drive 15 min to find a restaurant. There is a bird watching trail and the crocodile bridge not too far away though.

We spent our first night in Costa Rica here, it was easy to find from SJO and it had a beautiful view. Claudine is a lovely person and she also makes a delicious breakfast! Not to be missed! We were very happy with this B&B and we recommend it to everyone! A great way to begin or end your Costa Rica adventures as it is only one hour from SJO. Thanks again Claudine for not only your beautiful place but helping us get to our next destination! Ciao.
