as the site says, the path (and the whole center) is closed in winter. you do have access to the 10 minute walk path to the base of the waterfalls thought. The long path is closed with a small gate probably because it gets dangerous in cold weather / ice / snow.
they are nice even just to look at them from the bottom.
We joined a nostalgia train from Zell am See to Krimml following a night walk with candles to krimmel water falls. Short rest at a lovely restaurant "Henke's Place". It was magnificient.
Amazingly strong waterfall on such small river, the noise and views from the bottom or from the top are all spectacular. There is good pathway besides waterfall so you can walk all the way up to very top of waterfall or continue hiking further into valley. Realistically its not one but 4 waterfalls on top of each other as river runs down towards valley. There is restaurant close by and souvenir shops on the entrance path.
Actually we went to this place in December when no one would ideally expect us there. But it was fun and amazing. The day was sunny and brilliant. We did a hike up to middle of the falls. At the bottom the water was frozen and there was ice. At the middle the side edges of the fall and turned into ice structures. It was really breath taking and a completely different experience to see frozen waterfalls. Ideally, this place is good to visit in summer or at least on days when there is sunshine, so that you don't miss some spectacular views from atop. There is a direct train Pinygauer or a bus from Zell am see to this place. If you take train on weekend, please buy the weekend ticket for 5. Its really cheap
Krimml falls is probably the highest water falls in the salzburg region. It close to Zell Am See, a small skiing destination. Its ideal to embark on a drive from vienna to this place. The drive would be around 4-5 hours and you can route through Lake Mondsee. The salzburg district offers great lakes and water bodies to be visited.
I had halted at Krimml on my way to mosern. The falls can be seen at close waters and one can experience the water splashing onto yourself. The background noise of the falls suggests the intensity of the falls is high.
The area is rocky and slippery but reasonably safe for kids. i had carried my daughter and found it pretty comfortable. From the parking, we had to walk a little distance to get to the foot of the waterfalls.
It was a magnificent view and rejuvenating to see the crystal clear white falls amidst the rocks. There is also a small theme park for kids and its wonderful to click snaps.
