Owner description: At the doorstep of the historical village of Pamplemousses, within the Beau Plan estate, an old sugar factory houses a cultural, recreational and gourmet experience; it recalls the adventure of sugar which has left a profound impression on the history and identity of Mauritius. L'Aventure du Sucre invites you to a superb and interactive tour along the pathways of history and into the heart of Mauritius and its cultures. You will explore the memories of an era that will never stop travelling your mind. Each episode, each anecdote unveils the magic world of sugar. The tour is at the same time amazing, mesmerizing and enriching. L'Aventure du Sucre keeps the best to last : the tasting of the best of the Mauritian sugar industry, 12 unrefined natural sugars kept for export and having their own colour, texture and taste. You will also taste 9 New Grove rums which is the outcome of a meticulous manufacturing process. A shaded and charming restaurant greets the visitor with a sophisticated cuisine that brings together the savours of the island. These gourmet temptations are followed by a succession of homemade desserts made with natural sugars sists of an eco-museum, a boutique and a restaurant. This is a must place to visit. It has a great setting (being a disused factory with all the original equipment and machinery) , with large gardens , a wonderful restaurant, snack area and shops for souvenir and rum / sugar tasting. However, it has so much information, we just lost interest. We all left with different souvenir of the place and information ! I just felt a bit overwhelmed by the reading of history ... at the end I walked around and enjoyed most the spaciousness of the place. I come out more informed about the different types of sugar for my cooking and I have tasted all the ones on offer ! Our favourite rum was the honey one unanimously !
I still recommend the visit though, perhaps timing it with a guide to get the most of your visit. Easily taking 1 h to half a day , depending if you want to enjoy everything including lunch !

A must to visit when you are in Mauritius. Not only do you learn about the sugar industry (and rum making) but also get a quick and very interesting overview of the history of Mauritius. We had a very interesting and knowledgeable guide - Devina, a real gem, who enthusiastically took us through the very well constructed exhibition. She shared interesting details, allowed us to proceed at our own pace and was able to answer all our questions. Do not miss the rum and sugar tasting afterwards. Wonderful jams and gifts to buy at the shop. You need about 2 to 3 hours for this excursion if you do the guided tour, tasting and shopping. If you do the tour on your own, it will result in a much slower pace since you would have to read all the material yourself and might miss some of the interesting details. I would suggest you wait for the guided tour (included in your ticket price!!!) and do not do the walk through by yourself.

You get to find out a lot about Mauritius history also, not only about the sugar. It is interesting, there are a lot of new things to discover, but the minus i think that there is too much too read. It would be interesting if a guide would get you through all those infos somehow. Like this, you take the tour on your own, and basically everywhere you have to stop and read a lot. The things you read there are interesting, but our two kids (9y old) got bored, so we had to bypass some of the things. But interesting to see how the sugar is produced, to see all the machines and so on, plus also the difference between how it´s done now, comparing to hundreds of years ago.

This is a fun way to discover the proces of rum and get introduced to the history of Mauritius. You can read all the details on information boards and see the machines up close. It is a lot of texts to read, so after your visit you can taste different sugars/jams/honey and rum in the shops.
