Good 5 star hotel, but the restaurant is awful

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Aug 2021
We were a party of 8 including 4 children, in 3 rooms in August 2021.
The hotel public areas and rooms are attractive with adequate space. The Spa is outstanding, and I really mean it, proper world class Spa. Treatments were included with an itinerary in the price of the room.
The breakfast was very good.
The more senior staff, notably Pavol and Dada were excellent and tried their best to address some of our concerns below.
Housekeeping was patchy. For example, the tea, coffee, sugar wasn't replenished, no milk provided for tea/coffee, towels sometimes replaced, sometimes not etc.
But the major let down was the evening meal. Firstly, the hotel expected guests to order their evening meal 24 hours in advance which is ludicrous. Even with 24 hours notice they couldn't turn out a decent meal. A couple of examples. Very small pieces of fish fillet, served with boiled vegetables, no sauce. The fish had been cooked and kept warm so it was completely dry. Burger and chips, with a tasteless burger and flabby chips. Crepe Suzette that was simply inedible, bread that had been cut hours before serving and was stale. Apparently there were only 2 chefs in the kitchen, plus the head chef when he was working which wasn't often. The hotel said they had problems hiring due to COVID, but we didn't have similar issues in any other hotel or restaurant in Slovakia. So that's 2 chefs trying to cook for more than 80 people.
If the restaurant is important to you, go somewhere else.

We stayed in the hotel over Christmas. We were very happy with the hotel, room and the spa but had mixed feelings about the service in the restaurant.

The hotel is beautiful, reconstructed in Art-deco. It is tastefully decorated. We liked it a lot. The receptionist who welcomed us was very nice. She explained everything very well. The porter likewise, very friendly and showed us around.

We had a studio which was spacious. The white bathroom was very clean. A small decorated Christmas tree with a small present ready in the room at our arrival were a very nice touch.
The bed was probably too hard for my taste but not a big deal :-)

The spa is impeccable and was the highlight of the stay. Everything clean, new and cosy. The staff in the spa was very nice and helpful. We took a Christmas package so we had a number of treatments included in price. It was a nice surprise that the planning of treatments was ready at our arrival and that the balneo reception tried to organise everything so that we could take treatments at the same time, to the extent possible. It was our first holiday of this kind and we enjoyed it very much.

There was also a small gym, rather well equipped. Maybe it would be also useful if there were small towels at disposal to the guests in the gym.

The only downside of the hotel was the restaurant Sissi. We really wanted to like it but... We had a feeling that the management was trying to save money...As some pointed in the previous reviews, the breakfast was not really 5*, more variety and options on pastry and bread would be really welcomed. We understand that it was Christmas and shops were closed but a few pieces of Christmas cookies and croissant like rolls are not enough. It is also the first time ever I have experienced in a 5* hotel that only espresso is included in the breakfast buffet and that you have to pay extra for a cappuccino .... small thing but ...And it is not ok for a 5* hotel to serve old pretzel rolls although it was put in the oven on the day to make it crispy again...

The dinners were served as menu only. We had a choice from 3 meals on 23 December but one and only menu was served during the rest of the stay. The food was good though and the staff accommodated our wish to order a different meal for our child on the Christmas Day. I only regret that one and the same beetroot soup (really?) was served twice during our 4 day stay ... More variety would be pertinent and maybe for future, a choice from at least 2 menus would be nice...
And then comes the service in the restaurant Sissy which is definitely far from 5*... The staff was friendly (in particular the waitress with long black hair was amazing and very helpful) and tried probably its best, but lacked attentiveness and rapidity. Not sure what the problem was. At the breakfast, one day nobody even bothered to get our orders and take away dirty plates... At dinners, it took ages before somebody noticed that guests arrived and probably would like to order beverages... and after we ordered, nobody came later to ask if we wanted to order something more...Such a pity.

We also used the aqua-park which was rather ok. It is small (only two slides in winter) but was fun to go for an hour or so.

All in all we recommend the hotel and spa but the restaurant management should be improved to correspond to the level it aspires to.

Check in took a lot of time when I arrived at 1.00 am. Found things a bit difficult at beginning. Would have appreciated a little tour to explain the access to spa etc. Only found the route from bedroom to spa without going via reception on day3. Despite asking for a list of treatments in English it was only on day3 that I was given one.

That was the negative but the positive far outweighs the negative. Bedroom was very comfortable , food was excellent., dining room was quite formal with pianist at weekend, but you could opt to eat on the terrace. Tea and strudel served in afternoon .
Spa was great. The staff were terrific. Really well looked after in spa even although the girls did not speak English . Access to aqua park direct from hotel.

In front of hotel was a lovely little park, great for walks. I will definitely return.

The hotel offers great spa facilities and staff. The food is good not great. The apartment offers the best furnitures and the bed is wonderful. The bathroom is big and comfortable. The only minus is the staff that can not communicate in English.

Thats all he was able to write concerning the whole Pallace in such indeed poor language manner?!

Royal Pallace is the very and ultimate treasury of the furniture and interior styleas well as the spa in Slowakia - thats a fact without any doubt.

Problematic will be find the surrounding area of the whole small city, there is to see a sensible lack of investmens to the infrastructure, nevertheless its bread and butter of the municipality government, disregarding the presumably strangled mints of all slovak communes except the capitol. Well, thats politics yet but a "western" guest has therefore and that´just it to be silent at least.

Pros: brand new 5* hotel

Cons:
- hard to find main entrance. Moreover, no navigation directions on the website
- room was too cold ... moreover, staff could not help it
- hotel’s slippers were in only one size - 45. Toooo big for most people, especially for women. The staff could not help it
- no direct parking places . “Reserved” parking plac, in 100m distance from hotel, was totally full ... but cars belonging to local people

... to be continued ....

Dear guest,

thank you for your comment. However we respect all the comments of our guests and suggestions how to improve the hotel services, we kindly ask you to avoid an incorrect informaiton for another guests. Web site „therme.sk“ is an official site of Slovak Spa Company Turcianske Teplice, it means, this is not an official web site of the Royal Palace Hotel. Our web site (under the domain „royalpalace.sk“) is supposed to be active by May 19th. It will contain all important information. The room temperature was set up to the level of 23 degrees Celsius during your stay. Our hotel manager made proof by using of thermometer immediately. Unfurtunately, your comment relating to the parking is true. Hotel is situated on pedestrian zone. Because of this fact our guests must use the car park close to Spa Aquapark, 100 m from the hotel. There is a hotel bell boy available to park the car and assist with a baggage at guest´s disposal. The situation with the car park will be solved with the representatives of Municipality of spa town Turcianske Teplice at present. Hopefully, this ambiton will be succesful.

Best regards
