In order to watch the famous midnight sun, it was not easy to be there - drove 1,300 km, and you have to cross your fingers as well, since you have to bet for the weather there is good.
The night we arrived was cloudy and windy, and after spending time in the tunnel's exhibition, theatre (which was rather boring!) and souvenir shop, we finally stayed in the cafe at midnight to watch the natural wonder.
To be honest, it was not too impressive.......but the feeling of being at the northern end of the European continent was amazing.
Very inspiring and teaching place on the most northern place of Europe. Take some time with you to explore the outside monument and the breathtaking view into the polar sea, don't forget to visit as well the nice caves and various exhibitions at the museum. The video sequence about the seasons at the Northkapp is very entertaining! Don't forget to become a member of the Northkapp association.
We drove here from Honningsvag for our cruise shore excursion. The road was mostly flat, although part of it was ascending a mountain that needed a long guardrail. Luckily the weather was good. When we got there, it was covered with fog. There was an entrance fee to get in. I thought it was very cool. When we got outside, the fog had lifted. But it was still very windy as it is on a plateau. There is a globe you can pose with. There are cliffs that are pretty and a Children of the World monument. Inside they have a movie, restaurant, gift shop and coffee shop. There is also a chapel, some exhibits telling the history of this place and a Cave of Lights. We were glad we went and thought the exhibits were very interesting.
Your experience here may depend in great part on the weather and the crowds. We visited on a spectacularly beautiful day and, thanks to being on a tour that was part of our Hurtigurten voyage on the small Lofoten ship, we arrived before the crowds came and had a private breakfast overlooking the cape. The entire time we were at the cape, we saw no more than about 50 people. (I hear that when cruise ships are in the area, there can be more than 10,000 people visiting!) The Hurtigurten guide on the bus to the cape was excellent and shared many interesting facts about life here and history. (Seeing grazing reindeer and stopping to meet a Sami couple was a wonderful surprise.) We had time to stroll through the exhibits at leisure, sit in the chapel in silence, and watch the stunning short film showing life this far north. I imagine that with bad weather and thousands of people at the site, this would be a very different experience.
This is a really unique place, the northernmost point in Europe, apart from Knivskjellodden nearby which is only available through a 30-40 minute walk.
My wife used to work here more than 20 years ago. This was the first visit for myself and our children aged 10 and 8. The North Cape has an exceptional location, but it also causes problems with fog. Many people go there on the journey of their lifetime, only to experience seeing nothing due to fog. We stayed a week in a nearby town, and picked a day with sunshine.
We arrived at 3.45 pm in beautiful sunshine, with clouds surrounding the North Cape and resting majestetically over the ocean. It was actually a pretty quiet day with not so many tourists. We parked our car on the parking, and entered the plateau. We saw the famous globe and the fantastic view. It was for sure a moment We will remember as long as we live!
The entrance fee for a family of four driving a car is 630 NOK. By itself very expensive, but consisering this is a place you visit once in a lifetime, I don't think it's that bad.
In Nordkapphallen you find a cafe, restaurant, souvenir shop, church, exhibition and a cave with films. It is really worth a day's visit!
For a Norwegian, it is strange that the young people who work here come from low cost countries, and talk to you in English. Travelling the world, I always prefer learning local history, culture and geography from local people.
