Wonderful camping site

Review of Juva Camping
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Jul 2019
We are first time campers and this place really wowed us! A beautiful and peaceful location with the lake and surrounding forest. The staff were also really nice and helpful, and the facilities were up to date.

We had booked a holiday cottage for one night when visiting the area. I have stayed in these kind of accommodations previously as well, and did not have very high expectations, maybe therefore I was happily surprised.

The holiday cottage with bathroom was very basic but not close to as small as I thought it would be. We also had one nicely in the first row from the lake so if the weather would not have been quite crappy we could have enjoyed lake views from the small terrace.

The whole site is nice, not too fully built, so there was enough of your own peace, but still everything you needed. We rented a canoe for couple of hours and had nice time on the lake, even with the rain showers and not so warm weather at times.

Also a plus to the site is that there is a proper grocery store in 5 minutes drive of the site, and a smaller one even closer.

We stayed in a tent at Juva Camping because it's the perfect starting point for the Oravareitti route. The camping lies in a beautiful spot by the lake, very quiet and peaceful. Facilities are fine. Just to name one but, meals could be a bit more varied, but it's not a big issue.

Camping staff was extremely helpful. They helped us prepare the route and gave us some useful tips. The last day after picking us up down in Sulkava, Esa helped us buy the bus tickets for our departure. He was really nice and thanks to his inside knowledge we saved some money with the tickets! He also offered to drive us to the bus stop on the following day (but as it was quite close, we went on foot).

Now about the route: at Juva Camping you'll get everything you need (canoe at 40€/day, waterproof map, waterproof bags...). Just ask and they'll find what you need.

The route is absolutely beautiful. We covered the 57 km in 2 days, that means about 8 hours of daily paddling, keeping our pauses in no more than 20-30 minutes. So you must be kind of in good shape or do it in 3 days.

Is it difficult? Well, it was our 2nd time caoneing and we had to get used to it. Lakes are not an issue, but the water was quite low, which means that there were a lot of rocks in the rivers and weak currents (=a bigger effort for you!). On the last lake the weather changed in a sudden and we faced rain and moderate/strong wing gusts against us. But we managed it :-)

The best of the route is nature and its wildlife. We spotted wild swans, lots of ducks, marmots, a moose and a lynx! Actually, we encountered more animals than people along the way. You get to see so many things you wouldn't be able to otherwise!

I was there with friends of mine, it's a good quite place to rest. Green well maintained lawn, a lake in front of the houses, playground for children, cawberry and crunberry everywhere.

We lived in the house for 4 people, it's quite small, but with shower, toilet and some kitchen facilities there. No wi-fi, only nearby reception.

We paid 65 eur for 1 night - it's about 16 eur per person, not expensive at all.

And one small note, that is applicable for 99% campings in Finland - looks like Finns drink only coffee, no tea, and there are no kettles at the campings :) So if u travel by car and like tea - better to take a kettle and with you.

We stayed with tent in camp, so I can't comment on cabins they also have. Camp is on shore of Jukajarvi lake and perfect starting point for Oravareitti (Squirrel route) paddling route. It's calm and quite small, but with beautiful setup, so when you wake up on morning you see morning sun lightning up lake, and on evening you see sun going down behind trees on other side of lake.
Toilettes, house for cooking and cleaning dishes, and grill place are clean and well maintained, there's free morning sauna, and at reception you can get something to drink and free wifi.
We hired canoe to paddle down Oravareitti, and we got great service from people running camp, as for tips about what and where to go, as well as picking us and canoe from end point. Only bad thing was, there was not enough water which was due extremely hot and dry summer in Finland, and not something guys at Juva camping could do about. But it was still great experience to go down rivers and lakes.
So if you are around, and are not shy staying in tent or cabine for few nights, it's perfect place to visit!

We spent three nights here in July in a little cabin near the lake and we really enjoyed it. Ideally, you should have a car, but we managed without- except that the bus from Helsinki dropped us at the huge ABC garage/supermarket/cafe/tourist information. Our wheelie luggage was not suited to the gravel track for the 800 metre walk to the camping ground.

The cabin is pine lined and has a bunk, table and fridge - and excellent mosquito netting on the window, which is essential at night. The little deck was pleasant to sit on. We paid €6 for bedding and €7 each for breakfast in the cafe. We cooked in the communal kitchen at night - there is one frypan and saucepan but no crockery or cutlery.

Juva is very popular with campervans and caravans.

There is a fabulous sauna by the lake. Men 8.30 - 9.20am. Women 9.30 -10.30am. Many people went straight from the sauna into the lake. There were children in the sauna - they can start going at six months old. Finns seem very sociable in saunas, but you don't say hello to them walking around the campsite. It was our introduction to Finnish culture. They are not as friendly as Aussies and other nations, but they are not rude - and it is actually a relief to get away from the mandatory 'have a nice day' culture at home.

We stayed at Juva Camping to paddle the Squirrel Route aka the Oravareitti. We had intended to do the whole 52 km, camping half way along. Instead, we did two separate day paddles. The first on the lake. The second spectacular day along twisting streams, past meadows of wildflowers and summer cttages, through forests plus lakes and a river. Most people hire canoes. We hired two kayaks at €28 a day because we have kayaks at home. The rivers were running very fast because there had been lots of rain and we found it quite callenging to get in and out of the kayaks at the marked rest stops and portages past mills and low bridges. We enjoyed the rapids, but I capsized after nearly hitting trees in the stream.

The big cost is being taken to and from Juva Camping. It was €20 to stop 4 at Toivio where we started and €50 for the return trip from the halfway camping ground at stop 10. It was worth the money to experience the beauty of the Finnish lake disrict at water level.
