We had the exclusive use of the downstairs room for our Birthday celebration, our party being 10 people. The room is cosy and the door is closed so if we were noisy at times this did not disturb anyone else. Shane was our waiter and he was very attentive, popping in frequently and he gave us great service. Nothing was too much trouble from supplying drinks, vegetables, water jugs, doggie bags, and the like. Our Birthday Boy fancied himself a connoisseur of beers so we had organised a blind tasting of 6 beers in smallish glasses on a tray for him to identify. I had Chicken Pate as a starter. Most of the party had Turkey for the main meal, This was filling and tasty and the vegetables were not overdone. We all enjoyed the puddings whilst I had a cheeseboard. The cheeseboard was generously large and I needed a doggie bag for the excess. We were all impressed with the service and quality of food and will certainly be returning.

We really don't have many great places to eat in Wivenhoe! Lovely Italian, and we have lost 3 eateries in the village. Poor service, overpriced food ! Would rather eat at home. Tried a few times to use this place, but sometimes it's time to just give up !

Visited with a group of work friends for a lunchtime meal. Glad we booked in advance as it was busy even though it was a Monday. I chose beetroot, feta and sweet potato wrap which came with a salad and potato wedges - all very delicious as were friends choices of salad, ham, egg and chips. Service was friendly though maybe a bit slow but didn't bother us as we weren't in a hurry and could see that staff were busy. Very pleasant inside and tables not too close together.

Stayed 2 nights in lovely spacious room with large ensuite shower, tea coffee and all the little extras you need. Breakfast is almost anything you want and very nice.
Great location for surrounding areas and great walks on your door step.
Pub itself as great selection of beers to choice from and lovely friendly staff and locals, we ate twice and food again was lovely and serviced with a smile.
All in all lovely stay and would recommend.

The Black Buoy is a great place for beer lovers with guest ales regularly changed for good variety. They are served by friendly and knowledgeable staff and when feeling hungry you are assured of reliably good food of all kinds. This is a great place to enjoy a friendly stop for a meal and drink and is a fantastic landmark of Wivenhoe.
