Just spent 2 nights there in a room with attached private onsen.
This ryokan is located slightly outside the main tourist belt, which is closer to the river. It is in fact very close to the Gassho village.
Getting to and from town and the JR station is a breeze as the hotel has its own transport, although it is an easy 15 min walk downhill to town and a slightly more strenuous 20 min uphill climb back to the ryokan.
The ryokan itself has very friendly staff. Some English is spoken by a few staff and they made an effort to ensure that we were well looked after at all times.
The room rates comes with half board of breakfast and dinner, which is Japanese style kaiseki (12 courses!) for dinner and typical Japanese breakfast with rice or porridge, pickles, vegetables, fish etc. The food was of high quality and subtantial quantity.
There are two onsen, one on level 1 and one on the roof top. They're pretty small, but usually not very packed since there aren't many rooms and the public doesn't usually make the trudge uphill to this place.
Free wifi, free drinks (beer, tea, water) in the room bar and coupon for free drinks at the front lobby lounge every afternoon are thrown in as well.
Good place to stay if you want some quiet and relaxation.

Room tip: Splurge on a private onsen room for the ultimate hop in and hop out experience!

My friend and I had a private onsen in our room and were served breakfast and dinner by a lovely lady whose name, ashamedly I didn't get. The food was very traditionally Japanese which I found difficult, but it wasn't enough for me to give it less than five stars, as its my problem. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The hotel is five minutes walk from the morning market and the Gassho Village which has a museum of komainu - stone lion-dog Shinto shrine guardians - as well as a collection of traditional Hina matsuri dolls. The town centre was about 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel.

Room tip: We were on the third floor.

An onsen with great privacy. I had a Japanese room with an outdoor private onsen. Free drinks, and breakfast and dinner served in my room. The Suihouen own brand sake was good for kaiseiki dinner. In season local food like Gero fish, miso on leave etc were served. Suihouen has its own London taxi to pick up / drop off from/ to Gero station, this was a one of a kind experience!Gascho-Mura village is right opposite to the Suihouen, don't miss the chance to check it out!

Went here as a side trip to kansai.

Booked a room with private onsen.

Plus:
Room is huge and very well equipped with floor heating and massage machine.
Very beautiful scenery.
Nice public bath.
Good food.

No cons found.... though most staff speaks little English but they are super friendly and I find no problem communicate with them. After all, it's not an English speaking country. We can't expect every one speaks English.
