My wife and I were there early April. We booked a traditional Japanese style room with no meal. The room was big and clean. It also had a basic bathroom -- toilet and sink. We opted not to have the meals at the lodge and ate out. We used the onsen/bath facility in the lodge. There were both indoor and outdoor pools. The facility was small but there were only 2 others who came in and went out shortly afterwards while I was there. So, it being small was not a problem, but soap and shower-stools were strewn about. the futons were already made for us when we arrived. They were clean and comfortable and we slept well. Overall, it was a basic but nice Japanese ryokan experience (but kind of expensive -- $170+ without meals). I can tell it was a nice ryokan at one point, but it looked like it needed an update -- carpet in the hallway was dirty and wooden trims in the room and other common area furniture were faded and had stains. The owner gentleman came to the train station to pick us up and took us there the next morning. Even though we couldn't communicate very well, he tried to make small talks with us and was very kind. We appreciated the kindness.

As a side note, someone recommended that we get the wooden onsen-pass that you can use to go into many onsen facilities in the town. But, it turned out, the pass could be used only at some of them and only during limited time windows like 10am - 1pm, 2pm - 5pm, etc. After dinner, it was around 7pm and there were only two or three onsen facilities that will take the pass. We went to one but they didn't give us the towel or the basket to put your clothes in, so we couldn't use the facility. We ended up not being able to use the passes at all. In hindsight, we should not have bought the pass; you only need to use onsen once just to have the experience. If anyone considering getting the pass, I don't recommend it.

We received a very warm welcome from Miyuki-san, the owner who greeted us at the railway station. She speaks very good English and recommended some of the interesting things to do while in Japan. Our room is cosy and the futon is very comfortable. The outdoor onsen is superb! For those who wanted to experience the authentic Japanese hospitality, a family run ryokan like Isumizo is definitely a must-try.

Wonderful traditional cosy hotel , big space feel like home and easy to go around by walking around little tiny town. and close to train station and restaurants. Also can ask for traditional old style Japanese breakfast or dinner.

This hotel was an easy walk from the railway station and as soon as we arrived the friendly welcome and traditional charm of the hotel won us over. Gero has a lot of development and Izumiso stood out with its traditional approach. The tatami room was much larger than we had experienced elsewhere and the onset was also a good size and very welcome. Staff spoke English well and went out of there way to help. In a quiet area we had a good night sleep and next day there was no problem in leaving our bags and having a shower well after checkout time. The proprietor also drove us to the station with our bags. All in all a lovely experience.

This was my family's third visit to Izumisou. On each visit we've been warmly greeted at the train station, helped with luggage and the treated as very welcome guests for the remainder of our visits. The spa pools are very restful. The owner has kindly directed us to his favorite restaurants and made introductions for us. They were always perfect choices. This is a lovely choice for a visit to Gero.
