“Lovely place to visit on a summers day!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2011

Went on a day trip to the Great Saltee on the last of August 2011. The weather was perfect.
We booked our trip with the boatman, Declan Bates [--] on the Sunday previous.
Arrived at Kilmore Quay on the Wednesday morning for departure @11 am. Three adults and two children. Found Declan to be very helpful with the buggies etc. getting on and off the boat to the dinghy as also were a German couple who were also visiting the island. The Saltees are beautiful and well worth a visit. There are NO FACILITIES on the island, so you have to bring everything with you, food, water etc. Bring your rubbish home with you! Cliffs are steep so be careful, got nice photos of bird colonies and seals, plus great views.

“want to see sea-birds?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2010

This review is more about the saltee islands, but as the trip starts and finishes in Kilmore quay, I'll include a bit about it.

Kilmore is a small quiet little village with a small Quay's. it's an old hardbour, with a stone beach then a sandy beach running for at least 5 miles out from it. it's a very isolated and wild beach but stunning. Great for long walks.

From the Quay's there are boat trips to and from the Saltee Islands. There is one Island you can land on, the "Greater" Saltee, and spend the day exploring. there are no facilities on the Island, so bring food and water with you, and visit the Toilet before you go!

The main attraction on the Island are the birds, and the huge numbers of Ganets that breed there. it's a photographers dream. Be prepared for at least a 2 to 3 mile round trip hike including some hills.

note: there are usually only 2 boats over in the morning, one at 9:30 and one at 10:30, and they return at 3:30 and 4:30. they drop you on the island and then return later, so you really are on your own out there.
