Do a tour if you can. We were not overly interested in timber milling but booked on a guided tour and found ourselves completely fascinated. Our guide was passionate, informative and brought the site alive for us. The movie taken in the last days of the mill's operations added real experience. The site itself is beautiful even with construction happening.
It was a cold and windy summer day and there were not much to see. Paintings in the cliff were messy and difficult to see. Yes, it was very beautiful place, but was it worth of driving there?? I'm not sure. If you are already in the neighborhood, then of course you must visit this!
Finnish industrial history stored in a time capsule. Buildings range mostly from 1890s to -20s. There is a lot of red brick architecture with gothic revival details. Location is nice, bit of the main routes, but easy access with a car.
We got a nice tour with my son. Indoors there was some heavy metal and ingenious inventions. Thanks for the guiding to our host, who has personal experience on the subject.
Near the parking area, by the Verlankoski rapids, there is a neolithic red ochre painting across the water. Thousands of years have smudged the once proud moose and other figures painted on the grey granite, but some traces of red paint still remains visible.
Verla old factory site is a really interesting and beautiful place to visit if you find yourself around these areas.
The site is well-preserved and the sightseeing tour is nicely conducted. The site also has a cafe, shop and open grounds. Nearby there are ancient rock paintings.
Verla was simply amazing. Situated by beautiful lakes and rapids, this late 19h century industrial milieu has frozen in time and offered our family a truly special journey to the beginning of industrial revolution. There are also arts and crafts stores, a wine and cider store, a bread store which were very nice. The exhibition with a one-hour guided tour was very good. An ideal place for a day trip.
Very rare and unique place to visit, one of the World Heriage sites in Finland. You can live 60 years back the time, when paper and board was fabricated in this country. Lots of knowledge about papermaking history. You cannot understand the atmosphere before you really feel it!
