We enjoyed a 5 night stay following a safari from Nairobi to Mombasa towards the end of September 2017. Everything about the resort is stunning and a perfect place to unwind after our safari adventure.

Compared to many of the large resorts in the area, Water Lovers is tucked away on the edge of the beach. This adds to the intimate, personal feel which is emphasised by the staff.

The grounds are stunning and the rooms are possibly even better. We stayed in a first floor room which had a large bathroom, a beautiful 4 post bed and a spacious balcony that looks over the pool and ocean. The attention to detail and individuality of the rooms is incredible. The furnishings, ornaments, decor are all bespoke but the theme is continued across everything. Beach towels, cushions, pictures on the wall all add to the seamless and perfectly fitting design of the resort.

Within the rooms the window shutters were one of my favourite little details, but the intricate timber and palm leaf roof is a real thing of beauty!

The resort has a positive attitude to the environment and encourages recycling and reuse.

The food is incredible. Make sure you are hungry for every meal as the portions are huge. The baked food and biscuits are delicious and change daily. The lunch menu covers many types of food and all tastes will be catered for.

Another highlight of our stay is dinner! We were offered two choices for starter and two for main course (the staff are so accommodating I am sure they could offer more to suit individual requirements). For us, the two choices were more than enough and always difficult to choose from. Food is fresh, creative and has an edge to it that people would seek out if it were a restaurant. We visited the famous Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi early in the trip but enjoyed Water Lovers barbecue night much more. Wine and drink choices fit perfectly with the food offered.

I made friends with a very helpful and interesting young member of staff named Saidi. I haven’t mastered climbing coconut trees yet.

We really want to visit again! Paradise!

My rating is for a couple or a family spending a few days here after a safari.

I stayed 6 nights at Waterlovers in August. It is easy to get to from the Ukanda airstrip via a cab.

The facilities are lovely and do try to be sustainable without impacting your comfort at all. Valentina and the staff try hard to make it special and welcoming. It shows.

Meals are very good. I loved a long a peaceful breakfast. The staff is very attentive and don’t expect tips as-you-go but your tips make a huge impact on them so tipping at the end if you like is allowed (and seems expected).

Mixed drinks are ok but don’t expect to find your home’s top shelf of tequila and gin. Coconut is refreshing and the local beer is good.

I highly highly recommend the spa. Excellent massages at a very low price. Make it a daily event if you can.

Based on my one experience, this is not a place for a single person. Most people are there as couples or families so barside conversation is rare but I still found some interesting people.

The beach in front is very good. The high and low tides means there are both waves for body surfing and long stretches of sand at different times. You can walk to some beach bars down the way easily.

There are a few activities in the area such as kite surfing, sky diving, a monkey sanctuary or a visit to the mouth of the Congo for sunset pictures from a traditional boat. As a formerly avid diver, it was sad that the reef was not healthy and had very little to see. However, for casual snorkeling there are beautiful starfish, juvenile parrot, box, and other fish out at the sand bar (easy to reach).

The pool at the resort is very nice, clean and close to the bar.

There were no mosquitoes here at this time. :)

There are some people trying hard to make a living by selling items on the beach. Some people may be bothered by this. I was at first. Eventually, my irritation passed as I understood they are just doing what they can to get by. They greatly appreciate any purchase or gifts you offer.

See the pics for what I saw.

We ( family of 5 including children aged 17,14 and 12 yrs) visited WaterLovers for 4 nights this month prior to going on Safari in the Masai Mara. What a very lucky choice we made-this really is a gem of a hotel that has got all the ingredients completely right- a perfect place to relax after our arrival in Kenya. The Italian owners have put so much love and attention into the hotel and we really did feel lucky staying there. The rooms were beautiful, food delicious, beach lovely- but most importantly we were really made to feel at home, the staff were wonderful- and genuinely happy to help- and the whole business seemed to have a real integrity which is difficult to find in many hotels/resorts. Also the hotel recommended some wonderful excursions and we had a couple of fabulous trips to Mombassa and snorkelling at Waisini island.Thank you for a wonderful stay- Kenya was fantastic- we do hope to come back!

Room tip: All the rooms are lovely and face the sea

My wife Julia and I had the distinct pleasure to spend an entire week at Waterlovers and after having visited numerous beach resorts in more than 80 countries, we must conclude that Waterlovers sets a new standard in terms of hospitality! Thanks to the location at the beach with 50 shades of blue, an amazing attention to detail making for a bespoke and unique atmosphere of the place and lastly the always friendly, attentative and professional staff, the resort, Waterlovers has won a special place in our hearts! Given the challenges associated with opening, running and maintaining such a wonderful little retreat in a country like Kenya, the hard work and dedication of the owners Riccardo and Valentina must be held at highest esteem! The personal touch of them is clearly visible throughout the place and they always strive to make things better from a good Italian coffee in the morning to tasty food all day long! Thank you for having us - it's been our great pleasure!!! Ben & Julia
