We came here for a day visit as we had rented a car. The drive here is gorgeous, the hike to the cave is steep and they offer donkey rides for the experience. The cabe is mystical and enchanting! There are numerous food options and plenty of Cretan hospitality. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Entrance to the cave is on the top of mountain. Cave is very deep. Temperature there was about 15 degrees Celsius, when outside was about 25. From the entrance to the cave, you can see amazing landscape to the Lassithi plateau. If you want you can go to the top of mountain with donkey for 10 euro to the way up and back for 5 euros. Ticket price to the Zeus cave is 6 euro. If you are student from Europe and you have ISIC, then ticket is for free. Very nice place, worth to visit.

The car park and the cave are some way apart and some of the walking is across uneven ground. All the walk is up a very steep hill and when you get to the top there are another 200 steps down into the cave itself. For us because of the steepness of the climb and the darkness of the cave we only got part way into the cave, but even then it's beauty is clear. If walking on steep uneven ground is an issue for you and you don't fancy riding up on a donkey think carefully about attempting this ascent.

We drove here on recommendation by a local, it was well worth the visit.

On the drive towards the caves you circle a huge piece of flat land which has a number of beautiful tiny villages dotted around it.

When you arrive you have to pay for parking (2 euros), the car park itself has souvenir shops and restaurants.

The walk up towards the cave is steep and takes about 15-35 minutes depending on your level of fitness, you can hitch a ride with a donkey for 10 euros (15 return).

When you finally reach the top the views are great and you feel a sense of achievement. You have to pay 4 euros to visit the cave which is stunning, it feels like you're in a different world...truly amazing.

Tips:
There's no shade walking up so beware, maybe take an umbrella.
Take plenty of water with you, there's a shop when you reach the top but you'll need it walking up (especially in the summer).
The steps are wet and steep going in and out of the cave so make sure your footwear has good water grip.
