This was my second visit to The Saltings and I would go back again like a shot. My first visit was with my late husband in 2009, the second with a friend this month.
We loved the log construction of the building which made it interesting, warm, and peaceful. The accommodation was quirky (beds in alcoves and on balconies) the sitting and dining areas airy and well furnished - and the beds ridiculously comfortable. The weather was not conducive to spending much time on the balcony but we appreciated it being there.
We might have liked a bit more room for putting things down in the bathroom, but the shower was spacious and effective.
Kitchen absolutely fine, with nice crockery (good to look at as well as to use) and everything we could need for our evening meals.
We loved the garden, with its grass parking area, the rose hedge, the birds and even the sound of rain on the roof.
The Saltings is well sited in the village - at sea level, reasonably close to the store, and very peaceful. As far as exploring the peninsula is concerned, it couldn't be better. You are at stunning beaches with heart-stopping views of Rum and Eigg within minutes, along interesting roads with lots of nice bumpy stretches. The lighthouse provided history, thrills (splashing of the sea and honking of the fog horn), and a very good bowl of soup. The bread rolls from the Kilchoan Bakery were to die for, but you need to be up betimes to buy some before they and their other bread all disappears from the store.
W saw otters, deer, some wild goats, an owl and an eagle during or recent four day stay and spent many happy hours beachcombing. A trip to Mull was fun, too and easy to achieve via the frequent local ferry sailings.
I loved both my times at The Saltings and I am loathe to recommend it to others in case it means I can't go myself.....
Well equipped , clean and comfortable accommodation . Friendly welcome despite arriving in the dark and on a wild night. Cottage had drying area which was essential given the weather. Plenty of space and great views from the balcony. The shower room was fabulous, but would need a rota if 6 people were staying.
