We were visiting Cardiff at the weekend (24-25/09) and decided to stay over night somewhere close to our destination.
We checked late rooms website and came across a lovely looking The Hollybush. Have to say £50/night compare to Cardiff prices made us very happy. On the arrival staff welcomed us very warmly and nicely showed our room, which was quiet spacious and had a big bathroom (we stayed in the room just next door to the main entrance to the pub). We didn't think it was the best looking room as it needs some more love but for that price we couldn’t complain....NOT YET We had fridge with milk, coffee, teas and cereals for breakfast as they don't do cooking breakfast which was fine. After quick unpack we fancied some coffee and than realised we had only 2 sachets which won’t be enough to go with our breakfast following morning, so decided to ask for more while dinning. We had a lovely 3 course dinner in the restaurant above the bar. Food was absolutely divine, we sent compliments to the chef (we do not do that very often haha).
After the dinner we asked if we can get some more coffees for our room as two were not enough. The young lady went to ask her boss/supervisor if that was OK. She came back and told us they don't put too many as people are stealing them … The question is how do they know they were stolen? Maybe they just love coffee like we do! Nobody gave us the coffee but we noticed extra 2 sachets in our room, which we didn't like the idea of somebody being in our room while we were still having a drink in the pub. Next thing we didn't like was we couldn’t open the window in our bedroom and bathroom when we exanimated closely was very unimpressive – dirty!!!!
In the bathroom you have a wet room rather than a shower, which was fine, but the owner should provide a mop at least as after 2 people having shower if you need to use a toilet after, you need your wellies!!!!! Very wet and slippery. My boyfriend had cereals in the morning and the second pack of weetabix the date was expired on it. And Wifii didn't work either....We couldn't complain about our concerns to anybody as there is not such a think as ‘check out’, you put the keys through the post box. To end up my little story somebody should take more care of this place :-)
I would like to give 5 stars for food and 2 for room cleanness, that's why is in the middle

Room Tip: Room directly under the restaurant is not good for people who wants to go to bed earlier, you can he...

thank you for your review on trip advisor and we will be discussing your comments with all our staff and chef to check that tasks are completed correctly, The snug is our value room and is under the restaurant we will be checking cleanliness more regularly and we will look at moving window box, We put a set amount of tea and coffee in rooms and more can be supplied normally for a small charge but we gave you extra without any cost. We know the people that empty the teas and coffee in their suitcases as there is NO empty satchets in the bin and they are not coffee lovers like yourselves. Date on cereals should not of been out of date and do not know how this happened as we use 1 box every week, please remember this is a best before date not a sell by date and is still safe to eat.

Thank you again for your review and look forward to welcoming you again.

We absolutely loved our meals and were so impressed by the food even more so when your only paying £10 for two courses.
I hope this offer continues as I'm sure we will be visiting quite often from now on!
The pub itself is very cosy and quiet which was great as we had our baby boy with us and decided to stop for some food on the way back from a family day trip.
Will definitely be returning and also really need to try the Sunday roast.
Thank you for your great friendly service , The Davies family

I stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Get to know Jacky, she is very accommodating and will make you feel at home. The food is really nice, in particular look for the oven hot salt stones and cook your own steak - delicious, also, the 'Red Dragon' cheese is a variety to discover and really enjoy.
The staff are without exception, friendly, engaging, fun and a delight to interact with.
This is a marvelous location to explore this particular part of Wales, returning at the end of a days exploration to a tranquil place knowing you will shortly be eating good, exceptionally priced food and a good variety of drinks to accompany your meal.
I shall be back Jacky!!
James.

Hadn't been to the Hollybush Inn for some years. Was suggested by a friend who had been more recently and, although a very a quiet lunch was had (just the two of us) it was pretty good. We both had lasagne with a 'portion' of sweet potato chips (chips were awfully soggy) but the lasagne was good (no parmesan offered). Drinks were fine (soft) and the lady serving was very positive and pleasant. So...nothing to rave about, really, but the food was ok and the Inn wasn't too far off the beaten track (from Newport). Will call again one day.

Thankyou for your review and comments on trip advisor, We put parmesan cheese on top of our lasagne while cooking and additional cheese is available if requested, The sweet potato fry's are freshly prepared and cooked in house and do not get as crispy as frozen sweet potatoes , please request crispy ones on next visit and we will try and cook extra for you.

thanks for review , glad you enjoyed our 2 meals for £12 menu and look forward to see you again soon

Went to The Hollybush for a family birthday meal, in the evening. The service was excellent and the food very good. We chose from the 2 course for £1 menu, which you can add to if you want any extras. Everything was served promptly. There is a great patio area outside, which is excellent for a few drinks before your meal. There are steps up to the patio area which are quite steep, but once you are there it's worth the effort! All in all a fantastic evening and we will certainly be visiting again.
