“a lovely hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2012

we had two perfect weeks at the Altura at the beginning of January. The weather in england prompted us to take a late booking.Although quite a distance from the airport it was a bonus for trips over to Spain. We were given a suite which was large and very comfortable. The rooms do vary in sizes but all are nicely furnished. The food was very good and buffet style. Incredible staff. The whole hotel is spotless and has a very happy atmosphere which is why we shall be returning there. The complimentry bus goes to Tavira and Villa Real (where you catch the ferry over to spain) remember the 1 hour difference when coming back) This is a disabled friendly hotel but there is only one disabled room which I would advise booking in advance if you need it. We met some wonderful people who have been going there for years and years over the winter periods. We hope to join them next year.

Room Tip: End rooms have side window

This hotel deserves its good reviews. From the outside it is one big carbuncle! On the inside it has been tastefully refurbished. The rooms are on the small side and the higher up you are the better view but, anything above the fourth floor gives great views of the coastline.

We felt the double rooms for sun lovers were best. The superior rooms although a little larger with a seating area have balconies that are shaded by the exterior circular arches. Look at a picture of the hotel and you will see what I mean.

There is an excellent gym, free wifi (ask for the code at reception). For those who do not wish to take their lap top there is a computer in the library which you can use free of charge.

In the rooms there is a free safe that a small note book or iPad fit into. There is no kettles in the rooms so take one. There is an excellent super market at the back do the town where the locals shop for your English tea bags and coffee. It has a little cafe just inside the door where you can buy coffee and pastries. Ask for a galall with milk and you will get a large coffee. On a Friday you can pick up the free English news paper here.

The rooms have a flat screen tv which shows all five English tv channels. Football is shown in the bar. If they are not showing the match you know is on tv on the notice board (not really updated regularly). Just ask the bar man he will find the channel for you and happily put it on. All the staff are helpful and cheeful.

The food is good although not huge choices but always a fish or meat dish, plenty of salad and selection of deserts and fruit.

Three times a week the hotel run a free shuttle bus too Tivera and Villa Real San Antonio. From VRSA take the ferry across the river to Spain which is only 1.40 euros.

The beach at Altura is long sandy and full of shells turn left and walk for an hour to Monte Gordo, turn right and walk half an hour to Manta Rota.

This is a hotel for those who like a quiet location. We visited in January for one month and there were quiet a few older visitors who spend the winter months here. At weekends you get an influx of locals. I dare say in the busier summer months things hot up but even in January there were a few restaurants and cafe/bars open.

This was my first time in Portugal. It won't be the last. I am a single lady and went to Eurotel Altura with friends. Although out of season we found a friendly staff, fabulous food, and excellent facilities. Combine this with waking up and looking at the sunrise over the sea, warm sunny days and a warm hotel in the cool of the evening, together with live gentle music with our evening drinks, (until we asked for music to dance by).The wellness centre had everything I needed to relax, swim in the therapy jacuzzi and relax with a book. Boules, tennis, mini golf and outdoor pool in the beautiful gardens made for plenty of gentle exercise right by the inviting beach. We were treated as if we were the only guests and the reception staff were very helpful whatever the query or time of day or night. there was a complimentary bus to surrounding villages and golf courses and miles of beautiful clean beaches. a beautiful position close to town facilities but right on the beach. Wow, can't wait to go again. Christine Rudd

Room Tip: All face the sea. Higher the better view.

Spent the weekend at this hotel with friends - the staff were warm and friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The location is fantastic - over looking the beach with great walks nearby for the nature lover. Our room on the tenth floor was spacious, with a wide balcony - more than enough to sun bathe up there if you wanted to, or as I did, to watch the sun come up over the sea. Will be returning soon!
