We loved coming here to buy great souvenirs and the views at sunset amazing. We have vacationed in Italy several times and chose to take our adult children as it was a favorite!

The historic portion of this city is worth the trip through the less attractive lower portion. The history of local artists is told in the Civic Museum.

Colle di Val d'Elsa has a certain charm. It is often passed by as people speed between Florence and Sienna but we found it interesting. The Porta Volterrana is the impressive sturdy gate into the town. It is easy to imagine the 16th century battles that took place in this area and how the gate protected the citizens. There is a very atmospheric restaurant on the top of the wall.

great for picking up while entering the city, parkingspace nearby, there is also a nice restaurant inside as well as a little further down the street.

They say first impressions last and I have to say than when you see this impressive fortified gate you can imagine what the whole village is like. And it is true, a gem of a village that you access through a gem of a gate
