What an amazing place to stay in the beautiful Buttermere area with superb views and wonderful service. From the challenges of Red Pike and High Stile to a gentle walk round either Buttermere or Crummock Water, all levels of walking are available. The house is located within 10 minutes walk by road or 15 minutes stroll past the shore of Crummock Water, through gentle terrain into Buttermere village. No need to drive anywhere to start a walk, so much on your doorstep.

I stayed in the cottage with a group of four and it was perfect; a mix between self catering and hotel. Breakfast was brought over every morning by Tony and team and was extensive and very good, special mention to the delicious sausages. We opted for an evening meal (beef bourguignon) which Tony cooked to perfection, and we self catered or visited the village for other meals. We also had a packed lunch provided which was excellent value and included a delicious piece of home made tiffin.

Some lovely touches in the cottage provided by Tony who made us very welcome as soon as we arrived, with the highlight for me being able to wake up and sit at the back of the cottage taking in the incredible view across the valley and to the peaks in complete peace.

Although we had planned our days in advance, Tony offered suggestions which added to the experience and he is clearly very knowledgeable of the area and couldn't have been more helpful.

Can't wait to book in again as this was perfect in every way. A real find and great value for money.

Wood House is one of the loveliest places I have ever stayed in. I spent 3 nights here with friends recently on a girls' weekend. We had booked the self catering cottage and it was just perfect for us. There's a small kitchen, a living/dining room, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom with bath/shower. There were so many things we loved about this place.
1). The location - just on the outskirts of Buttermere with incredible views over Crummock water. It's incredibly peaceful there. As the weather was fabulous we spent much of the wekeend sat outside admiring the views and enjoying the peace and quiet.
2). Comfort - the cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. If we needed anything else, we just had to ask.
3). Service - Tony was the perfect host. He was on hand to answer any questions and offer advice on where to walk. He was friendly, efficient and helpful.
4). Food - the breakfast was lovely. Amazing home made bread, cereal and a cooked breakfast to order. We also had dinner one night that was served in the cottage and was fabulous. We took a packed lunch, provided by the hotel, with us on our hike and the chocolate tiffin was superb.
We are already hoping to go back there again. It really was the personal touches that made this place so special, along with the location. For a weekend that really is away from it all, I'd recommend this place. A huge thank you to Tony and his staff for making our weekend so perfect.

Return visit after too long a gap of six years. Very busy May Bank Holiday, but deep peace engulfed us as we entered Wood House grounds. Very comfortable spotlesssly clean and well decorated bedrooms and each with extensive outlook over Crummock Water and the hills. Extensive and well tended lawn and gardens, with footpaths down to gravel beaches on Crummock Water. Footpaths with bridges over little brooks lead to Buttermere village and the hills beyond. Excellent meal and breakfasts in lovely dining room - silver service! Very helpful friendly staff. We felt very privileged to stay at Wood House.

Outstanding. Attractive property in a beautiful setting overlooking Crummock Water. Characterful, charming and interesting with a relaxing ambience. Over and above all of that is the welcome from Tony and the excellent breakfast. Latter was quite possibly one of the best of English breakfasts to be had. The fresh fruit salad astonishing, home made bread and jam and marmalade and the full English excellent. Comfortable, en-suite (shower) bedroom with lovely views toward the lake and Mellbreak.
Wifi in the house is good. No TV in the bedroom.
Buttermere village within walking distance or a very short drive.

The setting of Woodhouse Buttermere on Crummock Water is sufficiently stunning. Throw in a couple of cute sheep and the majestic landscape of the Lake District, you’re truly in for a treat.

But what makes Woodhouse Buttermere truly special are Tony and Judy, the owners of this charming B&B. They make you feel so welcomed that after a day out, coming back feels like coming home. I am still smiling from the memories.

Things to note. Tony is a certified mountaineering guide so he’s well suited to taking you out on the trails, if you need him. We got him to keep us company on Rannerdale Knotts and while it wasn’t a complicated walk, his company and knowledge of the area was certainly welcomed. If you’re to saunter off on your own, he’s also happy to plot out routes with you on your map.

Save one night for dinner in the house. Tony does a mean bœuf bourguignon. And Judy is terrific with desserts. The chocolate oat bar that was in our packed lunch was delicious! All other nights, head out to the various pubs dotted around the area. Ask Tony and Judy for recommendations - they were spot on with the Kirkstile Inn and The Fish Inn for us!

Alcohol is not BYO but they have a decent selection in-house. There are no showers to be had, only baths. They are currently working on a system that allows for it. But the toilets are so well-heated that it’s not really an issue.

Last but not least, get ready for the best sleep(s) of your life!
