Thinking of staying at the Hotel Tunturi/Gielas then book somewhere different!

We are in the Gielas rather than the Tunturi and as far as rooms go they are really good and well decorated and if you are higher up you get good views from the room. Only issue we had with our room was that the bedroom should have had 2 curtains to draw together, however one was missing leaving the remaining one to stretch across the bedroom window which didn’t work as the window was wider than the curtain so at night the room was lit up like a Christmas tree. Reception did sort the issue out for us so we are now getting a good nights sleep.

Food: Appalling!!!!

As we are in the Gielas we have our breakfast in the lobby and our evening meal in the Tunturi.

Breakfast each day consist of a choice of cooked food, cold meats, fish, yoghurt and toast.

There are two domestic, not commercial, toasters one of which works the other you need to hold down the lever whilst it toasts the bread.

The cooked food is shocking. Each day there has been Scrambled Eggs which are inedible. They are like wallpaper paste rather than fluffy and they taste vile. Our first morning there was bacon which was nice however only the wallpaper paste to go with it. Second morning, meatballs and the wallpaper paste, third morning was little hotdog sausages and the wallpaper paste. Fourth morning back to the meatballs and wallpaper paste and today our fifth morning (only two days to go)mini hotdog sausages and wallpaper paste. I think chef has forgotten that Bacon exists, god know what we will get for the remaining two days.

As for the choice of Cold meats, fish etc they are ok if you want Salami, Ham, cold Salmon or Herring for breakfast. I personally do not.

Evening meals! Very repetitive and not weekly turnaround like most places, 2 day turn around here. Chef’s portfolio of dishes is very small.

Firstly none of the food is labelled so it is either pot luck or you have to ask the chef what the dishes are and he answers in one word answers. “Beef” “Pork” not Beef in red wine or pork in white wine sauce so you are still no closer to knowing what you are eating.

There is a choice of salad and cold pasta from the salad bar each night albeit a very small salad bar.

There is soup in a urn which is keeping it warm, not hot. Again not labelled. Admittedly the soup is good just not hot enough and is cold by the time you are halfway through eating it.

Main courses are kept warm on metal platters with burners underneath.

Each night there is a platter full of boiled potatoes, another full of Brussels and another with something I could not even describe other that to say what ever it was looked disgusting. So that is you choice or vegetables.

The remaining two platters contain a fish dish each night, which as someone who doesn’t eat fish I could not tell you what it was.

The other platter on night one was beef in a red sauce which was quite nice, night two was pork escalopes in a white wine and mushroom sauce which again was quite nice although a little more choice over the two nights would be nice.

Night three was the same as night one and night four was the same as night two.

Absolutely shocking.

There is no sign of a gluten free menu and nothing for people who have allergies.

The desserts are very basic and again not a big selection.

One night was a chocolate brownie type of dessert
Another has been a whipped cream with nuts and choc chips mixed through. Another night a berry gateaux.

We have now resorted to eating out as the choice of food is appalling.

Be warned though that eating out is very expensive with local restaurants serving burgers at £18 and pizzas at £15 just for a basic margarita.

That said it is better than the rubbish in the hotel.

This hotel was booked for us as part of our tour. We were lucky enough to stay in the Gielas section. The room was a great size and we had a fantastic view of the ski fields from our balcony, although it was so cold we couldn't stay outside very long. There was a sauna in the room, which we didn't use, but other members of our group did and they were very happy they did. We couldn't fault the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We booked this trip via Santas Lapland which included flights from Norwich. This was very convenient and the cabin crew were fantastic in getting people into the spirit. The suite that we booked was lovely, as it was a new building. Its about 30 yards from the main hotel, and that's where it all went downhill. The food was that dreadful on the first evening we never ate there again. Gave the gala dinner a miss as well and ate proper food somewhere else! The rest of the trip was well organised and a recommended extra trip to see the northern lights is a must.

We stayed here in December for 3 night booked through Santa Claus trips.

On arrival the first room we were shown was so basic not big enough for the 3 of us( 20 year old sofa bed in lounge) so no room at all in lounge area! Kitchen area was so dated. Spoke to rep asked to be moved was charged €200 and thankfully the lady on reception was so kind and gave us a lovely 3 bed room (there was only 3 of us) it was fabulous. Reps were really helpful and agreed the room was very dated. We called Santa Claus trips whilst there with the rep and they said to pay for the room take pictures and they would address when home. When home called them they were not interested we had to email pictures they forwarded the email to Santa laptop. Who took nearly a month to respond and said that the “Finnish decor is a different standard to English and was happy with the room they offered us” about 4/5 Emails back and forth and got no where!

We had a an amazing time visiting Santa etc just wish we had not booked this hotel as there are so many hotels to pick from and the customer service afterwards is awful so please be aware this is a once in a life time experience. Check the room your getting with pictures before you pay any money!!

Pictures are first room!! Then you can see the upgrade which was fabulous

I took my youngest son on a Santas Lapland trip staying at the Hotel Tunturi. My reason for writing this review is to commend Santas Lapland on their aftercare. We had a wonderful short 3 day trip staying in the Tunturi hotel (which was as described previously comfortable adequate not deluxe - totally fine!)
We had an amazing time making memories - the husky ride , reindeer ride , sledging etc and of course meeting the real Father Christmas.
Unfortunately 5 minutes before we had to leave the artic circle day I realised I had lost my phone which contained ALL our photos - my phone was not linked to the cloud and I had not sent any photos to anybody as I was busy enjoying the day. My son was very upset that he would not be able to show the rest of the family the photos as was I. We left contact details and caught our flight home the next day never expecting to see the photos again (it had started to snow heavily after we left the artic circle) A week later to my utter disbelief I received a phonemail from Santas Lapland in England saying they had lost property which belonged to me. Santas very hard working elves had gone looking for and found my now very broken phone and sent it back to the UK. Despite skidoo tracks smashing the screen and bending the phone it was repaired and we now have all the photos to help keep our memories. I will always be extremely grateful to all the reps who took time to help us and send on the phone after we had left.
