Beautiful and charming location. Very high price compared to the extremely low level of service. Poor cleaning and a lot of dust. Breakfast included in the room rate at the level of a mediocre two-stars hotel. So if you are lovers of fascinating locations and you do not mind the rest, I recommend it.

Dimore Storiche offers oldy world accommodation in a characterful Riad-type palazzo in the casbah/central city of Mazara del Vello, in which we felt perfectly safe (just in case anyone is worried about this). With the aid of our satnav we found the palazzo fairly easily. One of the resident family members helped us with our luggage and helped us park our rental car against the wall of the narrow street that is Via Bagno. Unfortunately, some unknown vehicle damaged the car while it was parked. It would have been safer to park in the nearby Corso Vittoria Veneto, near to Piazza Porta Palermo. Some better advice would have been useful.

Since there were few other guests present, being located in the ground floor King Suite that opens out on to the courtyard, we were not afflicted by tobacco smoke or noisy guests, as some previous guests have experienced. The suite was basic, but spacious and somewhat quirkily decorated, dark, and lit by powerful lights. It is not one of the elegant rooms shown on the TA or resort site, all of which are upstairs and the palazzo does not have a lift. Given the photos of elegant rooms on the "resort's" website, the King Suite we reserved was somewhat disappointing, and thus expensive for the quality of accommodation provided. You have to pay for oldy world elegance whereas you might prefer your money to be spent on greater comfort.

The staff, who are essentially a friendly Tunisian-Italian family in residence are very warm, friendly and helpful, and son Mohamed Ali speaks some English, which was useful. They also place a high priority on the accommodation's security although there are no safes in the rooms. The suite comprises a bedroom, a narrow bathroom with a quirky closet shower that resembles a Tardis and requires somewhat steady nerves on first use. Buffet breakfast is available in an elegant dining room but comprises primarily of pastries.

We experienced two restaurants during our stay, one the fine dining Donna Franca and the other the mid-range Trattoria La Trinacria. If we return to Mazara we would dine at both again.

Highlights of our trip were seeing the Dancing Satyr at the Museo del Satiro in Piazza Plebiscito, the 90-seat Teatro Garibaldi, and the Piazza della Republicca. And, of course, en route back to Palermo, we visited Selinunte.

If we revisit Mazara, I guess we would try MeliaResort Dimore Storiche again but opt for one of the more elegant rooms upstairs and ask for help with our luggage.

Room Tip: Choose an upstairs room, not the KIng Suite

My wife & I spent a couple of days in this quirky & clean 'hometel' (sic), located in the Kasbah district of Mazara del Vallo. Mohamed Ali & Franco did so much to make us feel welcomed & helped us in any & every aspect of our stay & departure. The public call to prayer in Arabic was enchanting. The food in this town is a delicious blend of various cultures that have influenced the character of Mazara del Vallo over the centuries. We absolutely recommend a stay at this establishment.

This hotel is located in a very narrow street off Piazza Porta Palermo. We found it very difficult to find initially and were not sure where to park. Visitors would be well advised to park up initially on Corso Vittoria Veneto and walk the short distance to the hotel, where the very friendly staff will advise where best to park for free. From the outside, the hotel does not inspire but, when you enter, you are transported into another era. The decor is amazing and the hotel even has it's own chapel. For all it's elegance and old world charm, the bedroom facilities are up-to-date with aircon, well fitted en-suite and plenty of clothes storage. The hotel is located centrally with easy access to the main areas of the town. Staff are very accommodating and most speak good English. The only slight disappointment was the lack of choice at breakfast, which consisted mainly of pastries.

MeliaResort Dimore Storiche is an old house with a wonderful court yard. The owner has been very welcoming and has given us some great tips. The place seems to have been in the same family for ages. It has certainly lots of character. We booked a small double room as the price was rather high. The room was indeed very small so that we opted for an upgrade to one of its apartments when we arrived. The rooms are basic with all the necessary amenities. WiFi was not very strong and hence only worked in parts of the apartment. You need to be aware that this place is tucked into the old city. It is impossible to drive in front of the hotel to unload the luggage. Parking is only available on the tiny public roads.

Room Tip: don't go for the smallest rooms

Cordialmente Mariagrazia Melia
