The location is perfect, and the view is exactly like the photograph! The balcony is our favourite spot for breakfast and dinner (when we are not out at the fantastic choice of restaurants just a few minutes along the broadwalk).
We love to play tennis and walk the beach for a good mile or simply laze on the beach ..... No need to even get dressed apart from swimwear!
The apartment has everything you need to rustle up a meal and if there is something you particularly need in the kitchen you just have to ask. Alexis is at the end of the phone for everything! Mark, the owner, is friendly and takes an interest in his guests and it was great to see him again. We came home and booked our next trip straight away for 2019.
We had already spent 10 happy days on the West Coast and were really excited to be moving to the South for our next 10 days at Upper Camelot. We chose this property due to its wonderful beachside position, it’s appearance in photographs and the reviews we read. Sadly we were left feeling a bit let down.
There is no question that the views are wonderful. Imagine having your breakfast on the balcony looking out to sea and spotting up to a dozen turtles swimming just off the shore - fabulous! On the other hand imagine being rudely woken at 6 a.m. every morning by the noise from the horns of the ZR mini buses which ran frequently throughout the day on the adjacent busy main road - not so good. Also the lower parts of the windows are covered by flimsy curtains with nothing covering the top parts meaning that the morning sun streamed into the bedrooms. You may wish to consider earplugs and eye shades if, like my Husband, you are a light sleeper.
We got off to a disappointing start because we felt the property was not particularly clean on our arrival and some items listed on the inventory were not present. To be fair once the agent was aware of this she arranged to have the whole place cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom.
Camelot has a beautiful beachfront position but unfortunately it has been pretty much commandeered by the SoCo hotel which is next door but one. As you exit the gate from Camelot House onto the beach beware that you do not get injured by the spokes from their beach umbrellas as they place them directly outside every morning. I must admit we had quite a laugh when my Husband, who woke very early each morning, put two of the sunloungers and an umbrella provided for us in our accommodation, on the beach outside our gate before the beach boy from the hotel had appeared to set up their loungers and umbrellas. The following morning said beach boy put out the hotel's loungers and umbrellas even earlier. Sadly for him we were going elsewhere that day. This was not a one-off as it happened again. It wasn’t a case of putting towels on beds to reserve them but rather putting sun beds on beach to reserve a spot!
Something which was completely out of the control of Camelot House and all other properties in the area is the problems being experienced by leaking sewage which is being allowed to flow into the sea in a small part of the South Coast. Unfortunately this meant we were not comfortable enough to swim in the sea directly outside of the property as the nearest leakage was only a few minutes walk away. This had considerable impact on our stay because we spent most days travelling to other beaches outside of the problem zone when we had specifically chosen Upper Camelot due its location and had intended to swim and snorkel from the beach there.
One advantage of being on the main road means easy access to buses which we took to Carlisle Bay some days, Dover Beach on others. There were a few restaurants within walking distance: Mama Mia, Blakey's on the Boardwalk, Artsplash Cafe, Shakers,to name a few we tried. Otherwise the ZRs will take you anywhere else you wish to eat eg Oistins, St Lawrence Gap or for special occasions,Champers.
In closing, we feel that the property is all about the beachside location but is in need of some upgrading eg new towels for the bathrooms (some of ours were thin and stained) , new bed cover (ours was old and shabby), heavier curtains to the bedroom and toilet area.
My husband and I have stayed at Camelot house six years in a row, and can't imagine staying anywhere else when we travel to Barbados each winter.
Alexis does a fabulous job of overseeing the rentals, and Mark, the owner, has done such a magnificent job of the artistic design of the home with so much attention to decorative details.
The location cannot be beat - it is right off the boardwalk on the south coast, which allows us to enjoy our morning walk/run right outside our door. Everything is within walking distance - great restaurants, shopping, groceries, and anywhere else you may wish to go is accessible by the local ZR vans (look for the white vans with the burgundy stripe on the side - listen for their wide variety of horn signals as well!) or by blue or yellow buses, which provide safe and efficient travel across the island for $1 US each way. You don't need a car - although having said that, we finally summoned up the courage to rent a car and will definitely do so in the future again, even for a few days, it's well worth it to have a car to get to some of the more out of the way spots - such as Little Bay or St. Nicholas Abbey.
Beaches are plentiful and varied - if you have young children, the shallow pools in front of Camelot House are perfect, and a little farther in is a deeper 'swimming pool', which is the perfect size for adults to swim in with calm water, backed and surrounded by a rock reef. At the end of the boardwalk to the left of Camelot is Accra Beach which has more vigorous waves. Going to the right leads to Coconut Court, where you can spend the day lounging under the delightful span of coconut palms, and enjoy their wonderful rum punch and two extremely reasonably priced happy hours at their beach bar.
Lower Camelot has the most expansive and fabulous deck which we absolutely adore. The first time we rented this place, we spent the majority of our time simply savouring the view and stayed on the deck a good portion of the day. We rented Upper Camelot the second year and really enjoyed the gorgeous and imaginative archictectural details, especially in the bedroom, as well as the extremely well appointed kitchen. After six times, we still enjoy the view and the exotic tree which has grown around and become a staple feature of the deck in Lower Camelot, with its welcoming and necessary shade particularly in the afternoon.
There is comfortable furniture in the living area, cable TV and movies, which we watch in the evenings. The kitchen doesn't have an oven, which is the one thing we desperately miss. The tiny toaster style oven takes a lot longer to cook food in, but at least there is some type of an oven as I love to cook my fresh fish in an oven.
The king size bed is firm and very comfortable, and also has a mosquito net overtop in case you wish to leave the windows open at night. The air conditioning unit in the bedroom is new this year and works beautifully. This is included in the price of the rental, but if you wish to have air con on downstairs, it is an extra fee. We don't bother with the additional a/c, leaving the doors and windows open downstairs cools it off quickly, as well as utilizing the fans. There is also additional sleeping in the front section of the bedroom with two twin beds if needed.
No bathtub in the tiny bathroom, but the shower head is new as well, and has plenty of force and no shortage of warm water, not that you really need a hot shower in Barbados!
Also noteworthy is the cleanliness of the place - Juliette is the best and most dedicated, industrious cleaning lady I have ever met. She takes such pride and pleasure in her work, and the entire place is so spic and span and smells like heaven when you arrive, and every week she returns, if you happen to be so blessed as to be here for several weeks at a time!
We absolutely consider Camelot House our home away from home, and hope we can afford to rent it for many, many years to come!
Loved the location right on the beach at the top of the boardwalk. Clean, Airy and spacious, comfortable, incredible views; enjoyed the sunrise and sunset on the balcony. Loved being able to walk to great restaurants or hop on a bus. Water was warm, clean and enjoyed the turtle siting's. Advise that you do purchase the extra air condt. Perhaps add a few more dishes to the kitchen and provide a few more towels. I would have liked a sound system to connect into. We had 9 people in the full house the first week and managed well. Enjoyed just the upper unit the second week with 4 people
We could not ask for a better place to stay. A total of 11 of us rented the upper and lower units of Camelot. The house worked out perfect for all of us. We loved the fact that it was right on the beach, the rocks in the water made it feel like our own little swiming area. We even saw turtles quite a few times swimming. It was nice that we A/C at night in our bedrooms, everyone slept so comfortably, hearing the ocean waves felt very soothing. The upper unit has a nice big kitchen, so we pretty much cooked all our food in there. Alexis even went shopping for us before we got there with a few items to tie us over till we were able to make it to a grocery, there were lots of restaurants nearby also. Rick and I were there for 2 weeks, inbetween the first and second week, Juliet came by to change the sheets and did a fantastic job of cleaning the units for us. We all enjoyed our stay here.
