Just back from a 3 week stay. We have been holidaying in Barbados for the last 17 years and for the past 11 have stayed at The Escape at the Gap[EATG] on the beautiful Dover beach. We had our reservations initially but during our stay these quickly disappeared. If you were previously guests at EATG then don’t expect SB to be a like for like replacement – it isn’t . Also don’t base your expectations on what Virgin holidays write about the hotel. Go to this hotel with an open mind and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, especially once it is fully finished . The SB has a great deal of potential and if it maintains standards achieved thus far and continues to improve this will be the hotel of choice for many.

The management team are committed to ensuring guests enjoy their stay. They are readily available and act immediately on any concerns. The majority of the rest of the staff are very helpful and attentive and typify the warm hospitality of Barbados. The food is excellent with a wide choice, although portions are small in Rachel’s restaurant. The jazz Sunday brunch should not be missed –it is exceptional.

The food was so good we hardly ate out - but well worth a visit are Cin Cin by the sea and Tapas
Bedrooms and bathrooms are a good size and housekeeping is excellent. We were beach front and first floor but our view of the beach was blocked by the beach restaurant.
Ground floor rooms may be rather dark because of vegetation. Rooms in the plantation house are roadside and noisy. They also do not have balconies. You need to go for an upgrade.

There are a lot of steps and narrow paths around the poolside. There is a lift but it is still a long walk via some steps and bridges from the beach restaurant. When it is wet the tiles are very slippery.
Evening entertainment is not a strength! The beach is poor for a “ beach” hotel. Swimming is not possible as it is shallow for a long way out and very rocky underfoot. There are many trees on the beach providing shade for those who like it. Swimming and open sandy beaches are a few minutes walk either side of SB.There is also a shuttle bus to the lovely Carlisle bay.

During our stay we saw improvements virtually daily. But there is still a lot to be done.

Booked for Escape at the Gap Jan 2011 for Feb 2012 but was transferred to Savannah after notification of Escape closing last July.
Visited Escape at the Gap 2 years ago and has a wondferful time.
For me Savannah just didn't live up to my expectations based on previous experience.

Firstly do not book a Plantation room as everyone I met who had one paid extra to be moved to a poolside room as Plantation rooms are shabby, near a noisy road and and have no balcony.

Secondly, there is no direct access to the sea as it is full of rocks. Ok you can walk a few minutes down to the Hilton or get the free hotel bus to Carlyle Bay where you are provided with free drinks and loungers. But while we were there the free lunch at Carlyle bay was stopped and I expect free drinks will also stop soon.

Thirdly, there is a lot of shade on the beach and around beach bar due to surrounding trees and felt quite gloomy.

Fourthly, The standard of bleanliness around the pool bar is terrible.
It does not open till 10am and if you want to sit on the terrace it had not been cleaned from the night before and overflowing ashtrays and other items were littered around. One morning at 11am my husband accidentally left a mound of sand on the terrace and although the staff set the tables for lunch and dinner next to it, it wasn't swept up. If you want a clean ashtray you have to go and get it yourself. Most of the 'waiting on' staff seemed miserable and to resent being asked for anything and if they brought drinks were obviously angling for tips.

Fifthly, Breakfast in Rachel's, and lunch and dinner in the buffet restaurant was like being in a self service works canteen. You had to hunt around for knives and forks and crockery. Ask for coffee and when it came was cold by the time they came back with milk. Dirty dishes left about for ages and flies and birds a constant nuisance.

Lastly, on a more positive note, my husband thought the beer was much better than last time.

To sum it up I do not feel the least bit tempted to return unless they clear the trees, hire a digger for all the rocks and clean their act and attitude up.

Room Tip: get room with pool view

We had read previous reviews about the Savannah Beach and as our holiday approached the reviews got better. We arrived to a welcome drink of rum punch and were shown to our room, which was a deluxe courtyard view room on the ground floor, the room was very clean, with a lovely big comfortable bed. The only noise we could hear at night was from the Barbados whistling frogs!! In the mornings a troop of 5 Barbados green monkeys parade down the beach posing for photographs, before going into the trees.

Breakfast was served each day in Rachel's restaurant and was plentiful with a good choice for everyone. Lunch was served buffet style at the beach-side bar, there wasn't a wide choice but what was there was nice, Dinner at the Beach-side bar was disappointing at the beginning of the holiday, but got a lot better towards the end, the chefs were very visible asking for suggestions for improvement and taking on board what people were saying. Rachel's for dinner was amazing, lovely setting, friendly waiting staff and delicious food. If you fancy going out for dinner Tapas at the end of the boardwalk can be highly recommended, make sure you book as it gets very busy.

The entertainment of an evening was ok. The bar staff do very interesting shots now they have shot glasses!

Cococabana beach is beautiful and a short minibus ride away, Cleverson the minibus driver is a character and keeps a very tidy bus!! Don't be afraid to use the reggae buses in the day to get around. Barbados is a lovely place with lovely friendly people. All in all our stay at Savannah Beach Hotel was very nice, the staff are a credit to the hotel and nothing was too much trouble for them. If your travelling with Virgin Holidays then you'll be looked after very very well by the best rep we have ever encountered called Solange, she remembered everyone's name, always happy, smiling and was able to provide a lot of useful information about Barbados where to go and what to do.

Room Tip: Court yard deluxe, avoid the Plantation rooms at any cost, noisy and no balcony
